    • An image projecting apparatus for projecting on an image receiving body an image on a microfilm incorporated in a cartridge is disclosed. This apparatus is provided with a cartridge loader for supporting a container for accommodating a plurality of cartridges. The cartridges in the container are disposed toward the cartridge holder provided for the image projecting apparatus to allow search of the microfilms held therein. The cartridges holding microfilms which have undergone the search are discharged from the cartridge holder. When the cartridge loader is adapted to allow attachment thereto of one container, the cartridges are taken out of the container and, after completion of the retrieval, the cartridges are returned to the container. When the cartridge loader is arranged to permit detachable attachment thereto of a first container for accommodating unsearched cartridges and a second container for accommodating searched cartridges, the cartridges which have undergone the search are returned to the second container after the cartridges in the first container have been attached to the cartridge holder and subjected to the search. When the cartridges in the first container are emptied, the first container is located at the position formerly occupied by the second container.

    • In a microfilm web handling apparatus wherein a photocell senses position markers corresponding to image frames along the microfilm web to enable positioning of a given image frame within a viewing station, a reference photocell provides a reference signal which is compared with a detected signal from the position sensing photocell to produce a position signal which is processed via logic networks to drive a film transport mechanism to thereby selectively position the microfilm web. Preferably, three photocells are provided, two of which sense position markers adjacent one edge of the microfilm web, while the third provides the reference signal. Each photocell has an effective sensing diameter which is not greater than one-half the dimension of a position marker parallel to the direction of travel of the web. In such an embodiment, the output of the reference photocell is compared with the detected signal from each of the two position indicating photocells.The apparatus further preferably includes a transverse motion carriage to enable image frames located within either of two parallel tracks along the length of the microfilm web to be selectively positioned within a viewing station. The transverse motion carriage and the direction of web transport are automatically controlled in response to appropriate input signals.

    • A high speed microfilm searching system is disclosed. The system optically displays frames of the microfilm. A frame or column of microfilm is made up of a sensor mark, pages of information and an index code. The index code is a meaningful alphanumeric or numeric key that accompanies each page or column. If it is alphabetic it varies in strict alphabetic sequence. If the components of the key are numeric they vary in an increasing or decreasing order. Microfilm projecting means mounted in the filmpath between feed and take-up reels clearly display on a viewing screen a page of information when the microfilm is stationary in accordance with existing technology. The high speed search system is new technology. A strobe lamp displays indexes of the moving microfilm on a screen. Each of the frames having an index of digital form and also has an optically detectable marker. The marker is placed in a fixed position with respect to the digit positions of the index to insure accurate strobing without the need for masks or shutters. Electronic control means is optically responsive to each marker to generate a marker signal which can trigger the strobe and display the index of that page, like a movie picture. At very low microfilm retrieval speeds each character of the index is legible so that all of the characters of the index can be read by the user. At increasingly high retrieval speeds only more significant characters can be read because of the rapid change of the low order characters. At the increasingly higher speeds the electronic control means may be only responsive to every second, third, fourth, etc. marker signal. As the desired index comes into range, whether going forward or backward, the viewer operator slows the speed of the microfilm so that more of the characters of the index can be read. When the desired index is very close, the film is moved very slowly so that all of the characters of each index can be read. This film is then stopped on the desired frame so that the contents of the page can be read on the viewing screen.
