    • A system for exhausting smoke from a building. The building has a roof, exterior walls and at least one room therein where smoke has accumulated. The system comprises an actuable compressor arranged to draw smokeless air from the atmosphere outside the building and force the atmospheric air through a conduit that is in communication with the compressor. The conduit permits the passage of the forced air therethrough and has a length extending across the room adjacent the ceiling of the room. The conduit has an exit end that is open to the atmosphere. The exit end projects through and extends some distance beyond the overhanging roof of the building to prevent reentry of exhausted smoke and gases. A smoke exhaust valve is located on the length of the conduit extending across the room. The smoke exhaust valve is normally in a closed position. A smoke detection means is provided for opening the smoke exhaust valve and for actuating the actuable compressor in response to detecting an amount of smoke in the room that exceeds a predetermined level. Whenever such an amount of smoke is detected, the smoke detection means actuates the actuable compressor which forces air through the conduit means. Smoke is drawn from the room into the conduit through the open smoke exhaust valve. The system vents the smoke to the atmosphere outside.

    • In highrise residential buildings, venting to remove smoke from corridors is required in case of fire. A method of venting smoke from a multi-floor building by providing a single supply and exhaust venting shaft communicating with each floor, with an air supply and exhaust grille opening into each corridor and communicating with the venting shaft; providing a supply source of pressurized air, and an exhaust source of reduced pressure each communicating with the venting shaft, and damper means for selectively closing or opening the communication of the supply source of pressurized air and exhaust source of reduced pressure to the venting shaft. Under normal conditions where pressure is desired in the corridors, the supply source is operating and the communication of the supply source is open to the venting shaft and the exhaust source communication to the venting shaft is closed. In case of a fire where venting of smoke or air is desired in at least one of the corridors is desired, the exhaust source is activated and communication of the exhaust source to the venting shaft is opened and supply source communication to the venting shaft is closed.

    • A system for venting smoke and fumes from selected floors of a multi-story building comprising a vertical smoke pipe or shaft which extends from the basement to the roof of the building and a plurality of vent units disposed along the smoke shaft, one being associated with each floor of the building. Each unit includes a hinged door that opens by gravity force and is normally maintained closed by a latch mechanism that may be operated remotely by electrical or pneumatic means or may be operated manually. A thin metallic gasket seals the door to its frame and further functions as a spring means for urging the door open when the latch mechanism is released.

    • An emergency release latch mechanism for a hinged cover of a hatchway construction, wherein the cover is heavily spring biased to open position but is normally restrained in closed position by the latch mechanism. The mechanism includes an emergency-actuated release member such as a low-temperature fusible metal link which, through a release mechanism which reduces the tensile load on the link, retains a latching dog in engagement with a shackle pin on the cover but assures positive disengagement therefrom to release the cover to open position in the event of actuation of the emergency-actuated release member. The latch mechanism is typically positioned at the center of the hatch but the release member and emergency-actuated release members are disposed near a wall of the hatch so that the latch mechanism may easily be set or reset by a person at the periphery of the hatch by securing a cable connecting the latch mechanism and release mechanism.
