    • A waste materials processing system and method for combusting solid waste material on grates in combination with comminuted waste material being combusted in suspension within a combustion zone. Conduits are positioned external to the combustion zone around which exhaust gases from the combustion zone pass. Comminuted waste material is driven through the conduits and by pyrolytic action emit gases which are collected and passed to a recovery system. Additionally, pre-dried sludge and sludge vapors derived from sanitary sewage are incorporated into the combustion zone for burning. The combined waste materials processing system may be incorporated within a steam generating system in order to increase the overall efficiency of the boiler.

    • Heavy hydrocarbon containing sludges such as refinery waste streams, oil storage tank sludges and marine oil tanker ballast are treated by passing the sludges in a flow stream through an indirect dryer to vaporize liquids having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure of less than about 700.degree. F. and to provide substantially dried solid particles discharged from the dryer. The dried particles, containing heavy hydrocarbons as a coating or as a part of the solids, are conducted to a combustor/oxidizer and exposed to a high velocity flow stream of oxygen containing gas, typically low pressure forced air, to burn the residual hydrocarbons in the solids and to reduce heavy metals and the like to oxides thereof. A sludge handling system includes a rotary disk type indirect dryer connected to a lift pipe type combustor/oxidizer for thorough exposure of the dried solids to an oxygen containing atmosphere. A centrifigal or cyclone type gas-solids separator receives the flow stream discharged from the lift pipe and a portion of the dried solids may be diverted after discharge from the dryer back to the dryer inlet to reduce the moisture content of the sludge flow stream introduced to the dryer to minimize caking and clogging of the dryer itself.

    • A combustion chamber capable of being directly fueled with green bark, green sawdust and the like material formed of refractory material, the chamber having a grate therein at the feed end thereof disposed towards the bottom of the chamber and a reduced outlet and having means for delivering particles of fuel material generally downwardly towards the grate while separating and enveloping the particles with pressurized turbulent air, and means for directing air upwardly through the grate against the downwardly directed air enveloped fuel particles in sufficient volume and with sufficient pressure and velocity to effect turbulent suspension of a substantial proportion of the fuel particles above the grate, the chamber further being air tight apart from the fuel and air input feeds and the outlet whereby the chamber is adapted to operate on a positive pressure with respect to the external ambient pressure.

    • A system for waste-to-energy conversion of municipal solid waste and urban forest residue includes as a central element a vortex-cyclone suspended combustion zone furnace, supplied via a shredder and a rotary preheat kiln, and followed by a waste heat boiler. The combustion furnace takes the form of a horizontal tunnel-like structure into which solid waste material from the preheat kiln is introduced near an entry end, with separate exit ports for hot gas and ash at an exit end. The furnace has spaced horizontal waterwall tubes, between which forced draft air is injected in a circular pattern aided by vanes, producing a swirling overfire air curtain surrounding the vortex-cyclone suspended combustion zone along the length of the furnace. In the manner of a cyclone separator, a cylindrical structure surrounds the central exhaust gas opening, and extends from the exit end wall into the combustion chamber to a circular leading edge. This cylindrical structure minimizes non-combustible particulate content in the gas flow directed out through the central exhaust gas opening.

    • High temperature combustion apparatus incorporating a pneumatically suspended combustion zone and capable of supporting relatively high combustion temperatures, in excess of 2400.degree. C. (4352.degree. F.) for essentially total combustion with minimal pollutant production. The combustion apparatus may be employed for waste material incineration in general, toxic waste incineration, and for smokeless burning of wood and vegetation. The combustion apparatus may be employed in an efficient steam electric power generating plant which employs municipal solid waste as fuel, and/or in combination with a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) electric generator. The pneumatically suspended combustion zone is created by having streams of combustion air directed upwardly from a floor grate and from the sides of a combustion chamber such that combustion occurs in a swirling turbulent mass which does not directly contact either the walls or the floor of the combustion chamber. The relatively high combustion temperatures are sustained by providing a high volume of excess combustion air, the same combustion air which maintains the pneumatically suspended combustion zone. High combustion temperatures are contained with little use of refractory materials, and without melting the combustion chamber sidewalls.
