    • A leak-proof damper with a self-diagnostic feature. An auxiliary oil reservoir body is disposed externally with respect to the damper cylinder and generally adjacent the rod seal, wherein the auxiliary oil reservoir body is concealed by an end cap. The maximum volume of oil retainable by the auxiliary oil reservoir body is predetermined to coincide with a volume of oil which may be lost from the interior of the damper cylinder and yet the damper will still function properly. The auxiliary oil reservoir body may be a seal body having an internal cavity providing an oil retention volume or an absorbent body having an absorbency capacity that provides an oil retention volume.

    • A vibration damping and isolation apparatus including a passive damping mechanism and an active enhancement mechanism. The passive damping mechanism operates to dissipate vibratory and shock forces applied to the vibration damping and isolation apparatus. The passive damping mechanism includes first and second spaced damping elements. A first resilient structure connects the first damping element to the second damping element to define a primary fluid chamber between the first and second damping elements. The passive damping mechanism further includes a second resilient structure that defines a secondary fluid chamber which is in fluid communication with the primary fluid chamber via a fluid flow orifice. A fluid fills the primary fluid chamber, the secondary fluid chamber and the fluid flow orifice. The active enhancement mechanism includes a system for sensing changes in fluid pressure, loads or other parameters of the passive damping mechanism as a result of the forces applied to the vibration damping and isolation apparatus. An actuator system of the active enhancement mechanism is coupled to the sensing system and acts on the passive damping mechanism, to change the fluid pressure within the passive damping mechanism in response to the sensing system or external commands. By actively changing the fluid pressure within the passive damping mechanism in response to forces, the active enhancement mechanism enhances the vibratory and shock dissipation of the passive damping mechanism and can actively change the stroke of the apparatus or force exerted by the apparatus.

    • A damping apparatus including a piston having an axis therethrough. The piston includes a coaxial body portion and a first and second end extending oppositely therefrom along the axis. A rigid housing is coaxial with and surrounds the body of the piston for forming a rigid fluid volume between the piston and the rigid housing. The rigid fluid volume includes a first fluid chamber at a first end of the piston and a second fluid chamber at the second end of the piston. The first and second fluid chambers are connected by a damping path. The damping apparatus further includes a flexible housing coupled to the first and second ends of the piston and surrounding the rigid housing to form a fluid return of lower resistance to flow than the damping path between the rigid housing and the flexible housing and to allow movement of the rigid housing with respect to the piston. The rigid housing forms a first and second restrictive path about the first and second ends of the piston, respectively, of higher resistance to flow than the damping path to allow fluid to flow between the fluid return and the rigid fluid volume.

    • A cushioning arrangement for railroad cars that is of the ''''end of car'''' cushioning type and includes a hydraulic cylinder keyed to the car fixed center sill against buff and draft forces and having its piston rod secured to a slidably mounted coupler adapter member having flanges projecting from either side of same that each carry a resilient draft impact absorbing cushion that cooperates with fixed draft stops. A compression spring acts between the hydraulic cylinder and the adapter member to bias the ram to its neutral position after a buff stroke, and the adapter member flanges engage over solid buff limiting stops at the end of the buff stroke. The hydraulic cushion includes a combined programmed metering-pressure sensitive orifice and control arrangement that insures needed control over the ram to overcome train line tendencies.
