    • Disclosed herein is a carburetor including a housing having a throat, means for supplying fuel to the throat intermediate its opposite ends, the fuel supplying means including a tube extending into the throat and including a plurality of fuel supply openings spaced along its length. A pivotable throttle member is positioned in the throat intermediate its opposite ends and is pivotable between a fluid flow restricting position and an open position. The pivotable throttle member includes a cam surface. The carburetor is also constructed such that an increased number of the openings supply fuel to the throat as the throttle member pivots from a fluid flow restricting position to an open position and the openings are closed as the throttle member pivots from an open position to a fluid flow restricting position. This is accomplished by a sleeve surrounding the tube and supported for slidable movement on the tube, and a cam follower engaging the cam surface, the cam follower carrying the sleeve whereby the sleeve is slideable on the tube in response to movement of the cam surface with respect to the cam follower.

    • A combination fuel introduction, distribution and air shaping device is provided for a fuel carburetion system of an internal combustion engine. The distributor is elongated and of generally inverted tear-drop cross-section. Fuel discharge openings are spaced longitudinally near or at the bottom of the distributor. The distributor extends across the intake air duct of an air-fuel mixing and modulating device that is adapted to deliver a mixture of finely divided fuel droplets in air to the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine. The body of the distributor divides the intake air flow into two converging air streams which entrain the fuel as liquid droplets sweeping it from a helically coiled wire extending along the downstream side of the distributor and uniformly distributing the droplets in the air streams.

    • A combustible air-liquid fuel mixture having a substantially constant air-to-fuel ratio is produced for delivery to the intake manifold of an engine. Air is passed through a fluid flow device having a variable area throat zone to increase the velocity of the air to sonic, and the area of the throat zone is varied in correlation with operating demands imposed upon the engine for which the mixture is produced. Liquid fuel is metered from a supply into the air stream at or before the throat zone in direct proportion to the cross-sectional area of the throat zone. The pressure of the high velocity air stream is sensed at a point where it bears a predictable relationship to atmospheric pressure, and the rate of fuel delivered into the air stream is adjusted in response to changes in the air pressure sensed so that the air-to-fuel ratio of the mixture is maintained substantially constant. Due to the particular design of the fluid flow device, air at sonic velocity passes through the throat zone over substantially the entire operating range of the engine down to low manifold vacuum levels. During the relatively brief subsonic mode of operation when the manifold vacuum levels are quite low, the fluid flow device functions as a metering venturi to introduce the liquid fuel into the varying velocity air stream.

    • A carburetor which is responsive to an operator controlled throttle includes a fuel metering and dispersion system for optimally mixing a fuel with air in preparation for the injection into the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine. The carburetor includes a housing with an air-fuel mixing passageway extending vertically therethrough and a fuel dispersion bar transverse to the air-fuel mixing passageway with a plurality of fuel dispersion openings therein for injecting fuel into the air-fuel mixing passageway transverse to the flow of air. A fuel pressure controlled spool valve in the dispersion bar varies the amount by which the fuel dispersion openings are opened in response to the volume of fuel entering the dispersion bar. Venturi plates upstream of the fuel dispersion bar are pivotally attached for variably opening and closing the air-fuel passageway. Throttle valve means are pivotally mounted in the air-fuel mixing passageway adjacent the fuel dispersion openings for variable opening and closing the space between the fuel dispersion openings and the throttle valves. A metering valve assembly is linked to the venturi plates for variably regulating the flow of fuel from a fuel reservoir into the dispersion bar so that the amount of fuel metered into the dispersion bar increases as the space between the venturi plates increases according to a predefined determined metering criteria.
