    • A muffler (1) for an exhaust system of a motor vehicle internal combustion engine has a housing (2), with an exhaust gas inlet (4) and an exhaust gas outlet (5), including a circumferentially extending jacket (16) and end panels (14, 15) each axial ends. A chamber (18) in the housing interior (3), through which exhaust gas flows during operation, is axially limited by intermediate panels (20, 21) at axial ends. The thermal load on the jacket (16) is reduced with an insulating shell (29), arranged in the housing interior, extending in the circumferential direction (17) along the jacket (16). The two intermediate panels (20, 21) are supported on the insulating shell (29), each with an outer panel edge (30, 31). The insulating shell (29) is supported radially on the jacket (16) with a shell edge (33). An insulating gap (35) is formed radially between the jacket and the insulating shell.

    • A muffler for attenuating acoustic noise in a gas flow which includes a casing having an inlet and an outlet, such that the gas flow passes through the casing from the inlet to the outlet. The muffler also includes an acoustic trap disposed within the casing and which spans the distance between opposing top and bottom walls of the casing. The acoustic trap further comprises a first arcuate deflector having a concave frontside surface configured to direct the gas flow from the inlet through a first segment of an expanding spiral revolution, and one or more second arcuate deflectors which are radially offset from the first arcuate deflector and configured to direct a portion of the inlet gas flow through a remainder segment of the expanding spiral revolution.

    • An air turbine apparatus for use with a combustion engine either as a muffler or as an air intake device is comprised of a housing defining an expansion chamber and an airfoil positioned within the housing. The airfoil includes a central aperture extending longitudinally therethrough that is in fluid communication with both the inlet and the outlet of the housing. The airfoil is configured to allow gases flowing through the inlet to flow between the outer edge of the airfoil and the housing and through the aperture of the airfoil. In addition, the air traveling through the housing is caused to spin as it travels through the housing. This rotational flow increased the rate of flow of gases through the air turbine device. A chop core is provided between the airfoil and the outlet of the housing to encourage turbulent flow of gases without restricting flow to produce a muffling effect and thus a dampening of noise from the combustion engine.

    • An exhaust silencer for receiving exhaust gasses from an engine includes inner and outer cylindrical walls and top and bottom closure plates. The inner wall and the top and bottom closure plates define a central collection chamber. Baffles extend alternately from the inner cylindrical wall towards the outer cylindrical wall and from the outer cylindrical wall towards the inner cylindrical wall, so as to define an undulating path for exhaust gasses as they pass from the central collection chamber to an outlet. Sound insulating material is attached to each of the upstream surfaces of the baffles, to the outer surface of the central collection chamber, to the inner surface of the outer cylindrical wall, and to the inner surfaces of each of the top and bottom closure plates. The sound insulating material is protected by expanded metal. The baffles are attached at their vertical edges to the expanded metal and not to the actual inner and outer cylindrical walls themselves. Transmission of sound to the outer cylindrical wall is thus markedly reduced.
