The valve lift determination module determines valve lift based on at least one of a first period when a valve is open and N differences between a first value of a valve lift signal generated by a valve lift sensor when the valve is closed and a second value of the valve lift signal when the valve is open, wherein N is an integer greater than one. The fault detection module detects a fault in a valve actuator based on the valve lift.

The output-value obtaining portion obtains the output value of the knock sensor, which corresponds to an intensity of an engine knocking. A preignition estimating portion estimates that a preignition will be generated in an internal combustion engine, when the obtained output value is greater than or equal to the specified threshold. When the preignition estimating portion estimates that a preignition will be generated, the exhaust-valve timing control mechanism advances the opening time of the exhaust valve to suppress the preignition.

A VVT mechanism according to the disclosure can include: a lever having a first end, a second end, and a fulcrum positioned therebetween; a length-adjustable push rod coupled to the first end of the lever and including an actuator therein; a rod valve coupled to the second end of the lever, the rod valve being configured to open and close an intake valve of an engine system based on a movement of the lever; and an engine control unit (ECU) operatively connected to the actuator of the length-adjustable push rod, wherein the ECU adjusts a length of the length-adjustable push rod based on an operating condition of the engine system. In addition or alternatively, the ECU can control an amount of cushioning fluid for the valves to affect the rate at which the intake valve opens or closes.

A cam cap rotatably supports the first and second cam portions together with a cylinder head, and the slider housings are slidably mounted thereto. A control shaft is disposed parallel with the camshaft and selectively moves the first and the second slider housings, and a control portion selectively rotates the control shaft so as to change positions of the inner brackets.
