摘要： An apparatus sometime referred to as a freeze pipe and methods of using these apparatus in ground freezing applications is provided. Ground freezing is a temporary ground support technique that is used extensively for groundwater control and ground stabilization in underground construction and deep excavations. The process involves circulating refrigerated liquids through a series of vertically disposed “freeze” pipes to freeze the ground creating a solid barrier that prevents water intrusion and provides structural support for excavation. The freeze pipes are directed to “zone freeze” pipes or the like, which cause the ground to freeze in selected segments along the pipe, also referred to as zones.

(null62null F.) to minimize drilling for the freeze pipe installation. The heat transfer fluid is preferably aqua ammonia (ammonium hydroxide) because of its beneficial characteristics in this application. The circulating heat transfer fluid is preferably cooled by a refrigeration system that includes low and high stage cycles arranged in a cascade relationship and using ammonia or another refrigerant in the high stage refrigeration system and carbon dioxide as the refrigerant in the low stage refrigeration system.

摘要： A method and apparatus for increasing the load bearing capacity of tubular piles by freezing an area of soil surrounding the piles. A refrigeration unit is located on the surface of an offshore structure and circulates cold brine to an isolated section of the pile. The brine freezes the soil surrounding the pile. Freezing the soil increases the surface friction beween the pile and the soil, providing increased load bearing capacity.
