All other needle bars not in the sewing position are restricted by the control guide way from moving axially.

    • Individual motors in a sewing machine of the invention are provided, for each of a plurality of machine heads, for individually driving respective mechanical components, such as a needle bar driving mechanism, thread take-up lever and presser foot mechanism. A plurality of rotary hooks are driven by a common motor. Even in a case where embroidering workpieces set on the individual machine heads differ in material between the heads and upper threads used for the machine heads differ in characteristic between the heads, the sewing machine can make, in a concurrent, parallel fashion, embroidery products of different texture suited for the respective materials, characteristics, etc., by setting independent stitch formation per machine head.

    • A drive mechanism for connecting a drive shaft of a sewing machine to a plurality of reciprocatable needle bars which are advantageously mounted in a single guide frame for reciprocation in the machine includes a link connection for each bar. The link connection includes an oscillatable two armed lever for each bar. It has an input arm driven by a shaft mounted in the machine for oscillation about a fixed axis and an output arm connected to a first link of a cooperative pivotally interconnected first and second link pair. An actuator shaft for each bar carries a respective actuator crank which in turn is connected through a link of relatively short length to the upper ends of the needle bars by a pivotal connection. The guide link is connected to the cooperative link pairs at their pivotal interconnection to each other and it may be moved by a setting mechanism which is either hydraulically or electrically actuated and is effective to change the reciprocation of each needle bar separately or together and without disconnecting the operating mechanism driving the needle bars.

    • In a device for disconnecting a needle bar from a needle-bar connecting stud on a sewing machine, a drive source drives a moving board. The moving board lowers a predetermined distance until a threading hook goes through an eye in a needle. A disconnecting member rotates a clutch click and disconnects the clutch click from a needle-bar connecting stud. The needle bar thus disengages from the needle-bar connecting stud. The moving board further lowers, an actuating rod lowers, the actuating rod in turn lowers a threading rod, the threading rod further rotates, and the threading hook goes through the eye. The needle is thus threaded. The disconnecting operation and the threading operation are carried out by using the drive source in common. Consequently, the device is simple in structure and compact in size. Since the needle bar only rises to disengage from the needle-bar connecting stud, no scratches are given on the fabric. The sewing machine can effectively execute pattern-sewing, basting and other operations.

    • A sewing machine having two needles supported in a needle holder, which needle holder is horizontally displacable, to present one needle to an active workstation in a prethreaded manner and simultaneously shift the other needle which has a different thread therein, into an adjacent inactive position. As the needles are being shifted, the needle moving to inactive status has its thread clamped against the needle holder by a wheel, to secure the thread from being pulled therefrom or straying. A vacuum tube arranged at each respective inactive position or station sucks the tail of the thread therein. A pair of thread guides, one for each thread, are arranged for vertical movement, to pullback on the dangling thread of the inactive needle, to prevent the thread from whipping during its inactive status. Each thread passes around a thread engaging wheel comprising a dual bobbin monitor arranged on a single axis. A thrust bearing is arranged between each thread engaging wheel and an adjustable knob is arranged to bias the sides of the wheels to allow each thread to have the same tension regardless of its current status, active or inactive. A wedge arrangement at the drive end of the sewing machine mates into a groove on a disk attached to the drive shaft which wedge arrangement, after stopping the drive shaft from rotating, then permits the shifting of the needles from active to inactive status. The wedge mating in the groove of the shaft insures proper alignment of the shifting mechanism permitting the shuttling of the needles from their inactive to the active position and vice versa.

    • A needle bar coupling in an embroidering machine which has a plurality of needle bars driven by separate cranks operated by a drive shaft, comprises a crank which is connected to the needle bar and to the drive shaft to move the needle bar upon rotation of the shaft. For this purpose a coupling or collar is engaged on the shaft and it carries the crank. A pawl is pivoted on the crank and it includes a tooth portion which engages in a groove of the coupling so that the coupling drives the crank when the shaft is rotated. In order to disengage the crank and the needle bar drive a contact member is provided adjacent the pawl which is shifted to engage the pawl and dislodge the tooth of the pawl from the coupling.
