    • A process for the transalkylation of an aromatic feedstock containing a benzene component and a polyalkylated aromatic component comprising at least one polyalkyl aromatic compound of at least nine carbon atoms. The feedstock is supplied to a reaction zone containing a metal modified zeolite transalkylation catalyst. The reaction zone is operated under conditions providing an equivalent conversion of pure toluene in the presence of the catalyst within the range of 40-55%, resulting in a transalkylated product with a reduced polyalkyl benzene content and an enhance monoalkyl benzene content relative to the transalkylation feedstock. In continued operation of the transalkylation reaction zone, at least one of the reaction conditions of temperature, pressure, and space velocity is adjusted in order to maintain a constant reaction severity to provide a desired equivalent conversion of toluene within a tolerance range of null2%. Specifically, the temperature is progressively increased while continuing the operation of the transalkylation zone to maintain a condition of constant reaction severity.

    • In a process for isomerizing saturated C.sub.4- C.sub.10 hydrocarbons (preferably n-pentane) in the presence of a platinum/zeolite catalyst, wherein sulfur compounds are present in the feed as impurities and cause catalyst deactivating, at least one volatile chlorine compound (preferably tetrachloroethylene or carbon tetrachloride) is added to the feed in an amount sufficient to counteract the catalyst deactivation. A correlation between effective amounts of chloride additive(s) required to counteract the catalyst deactivating effect caused by specific sulfur compound(s) and a specific parameter of various sulfur compounds has been established. The water content in the isomerization feed is not to exceed about 60 ppm H.sub.2 O (based on the weight of the at least one feed hydrocarbons.
