    • The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing tempered glass sheets directly from a ribbon or band of glass emerging from a glass fabricating furnace, the terminal stages of a float process or the like. The method is characterized by subjecting a continuous ribbon or band of glass proceeding directly from a glass manufacturing installation into a quench which rapidly reduces the temperature of the external surfaces of the glass, scoring and breaking the glass at an intermediate stage in the quench procedure, and specifically at the point or range within the quench where the surface of the glass is susceptible of being scored by a scribing apparatus without significant permanent plastic deformation of the surface surrounding the score line, and where the temperature internally of the glass is at least above the strain relief temperature of the specific glass formulation being processed. Optimally, scoring and breaking are effected within the quench at or near that point or range in the quench cycle wherein the temperature differential between the external surfaces and the interior of the glass is greatest. Means may be provided for varying the rate at which heat is extracted during the quench so as to prolong the time period within which the band may be scored and broken.

    • In a glass working machine in which is ribbon of molten glass is laid down over a forming mould having a mould cavity and surrounding supporting surfaces, an article is formed in the mould cavity and an excess web of the ribbon is sheared from the article about a cavity entrance bordering wall of the mould, the machine having one shear blade comprising a margin of the cavity entrance bordering wall and another shear blade comprising a roller which can roll over the mould and is progressively engageable with the margin of the wall. A ribbon 100 of molten glass fed between roll 101, 102 is laid over moulds 30 on the circumference of a turret 20 mounted on a horizontally adjustable carriage 11 by a tubular hub 21 rotatable (counterclockwise as shown) about a tubular shaft 23 supported in blocks 24 on horizontal beams 25 of the carriage 11. A belt conveyer 40 for finished articles is supported transversely of the turret 20 from a post 39 on carriage 11 by collars 42, 43 which can be rotated to swing the conveyer from under the turret. A cullet shoot (105, not shown) is positioned adjacent the belt 40. The turret 20 comprises rims 26, 27 supported from hub 21 by spokes 28, 29, between which the moulds 30 are fitted, the rims being provided with racks 31, guide rails 32 and a ring gear 33 on rim 26 by which the turret 20 is rotated through motor 34, speed reduction gear and a pinion (not shown). Each mould 30 has a central mould cavity 37 and outer web retaining cavities 38 in a supporting edge 30b joined by passages 36 to a valve eductor assembly 45 through lines 41, 41a and lines 41, 41b, 41c respectively, the lines 41a, 41b, 41c being to cavities on three consecutive moulds as shown in Fig. 5 so that line 41a forms the article in the mould and the lines 41b, 41c hold the web to the edge 30b. Each mould 30 is formed with longitudinal and transverse cutting edges 30a which co-operate with shearing blades 85 formed on a roller 71 to cut out the article from the ribbon of glass and leave the web held on the edges 30b. The webs are then severed transversely by shear blades 90 and 91 on a second roller 61 co-operating with blades 92 and 93 on the mould. The formed article and the severed web ahead of that article are released together when the suction through lines 41a, 41b, 41c is replaced by air pressure and at the same time air is passed by line 41d to an air cylinder 52 to press a fork 53 outwardly through holes between the moulds 30 to positively remove the web portion. The rollers 61, 71 are mounted on shaft 62, 77, journalled in blocks 63, 73 on arms 64, 74, pivoted on stub shafts 65, 75 on brackets 60, pivotable about main shaft 23. Each arm 64, 67 at its opposite end is linked to one end of a fluid-operated unit 66, 76 by which the arms 64, 74 may be raised for initial feed through of the glass ribbon 100. The brackets 60 are adjusted about shaft 23 by a linkage 80 secured to upright 81 on carriage 11. The rollers 61, 71 are maintained in registry with the moulds 30 by rails 32 and circumferentially of the turret 20 by gears engaging the racks 31. To maintain the correct position while the rollers 61, 71 are raised, they are interconnected by chains so that when one is raised it is still rotated by the other. Take-out mechanism as disclosed in Specification 1,006,246 may be used.
