    • A rotary beam has mounted thereon a pair of carrier arms for rotatably supporting a roll of web from which the web is fed into the press, and another such arm pair for supporting another such web roll to which the web is to be spliced upon consumption of the first web roll. One of each pair of carrier arms has rotatably mounted thereto a hollow spindle to be partly inserted in the tubular core of the web roll. The hollow spindle has detents arranged at circumferential spacings thereon for fluid pressure actuation into frictional engagement with the inside surface of the web roll core. The other of each carrier arm pair has a second spindle rotatably mounted thereto which is to be held endwise against the web roll core via a spring-loaded end cap. How hard the web roll core is urged against the first spindle by the second spindle, resisting the unwinding of the web therefrom, depends upon whether the second spindle is held fast against the end cap or spaced therefrom by the spring. The second spindle is sprung away from the end cap upon decrease of the web roll diameter to a predefined limit, in order to mitigate tension on the web being paid out.

    • Apparatus for handling rolls of web goods such as fabric, preparatory to the unwinding of same. A carriage is movable vertically about a support frame between a first position where a roll of web goods is stored and a second upper position where the roll of web goods will be unwound. The carriage includes two independently driven arm assemblies, each of which has a chuck for holding engagement with the core of the roll of web goods. With the carriage in the upper position, once a roll of web goods is fully unwound leaving the bare core chucked between the movable arms, a core receiver is placed beneath the core, after which the core is unchucked and automatically stripped from the arms, whereby it is caught by the core receiver. The core receiver then moves out of the way and the carriage descending about a new roll of web goods. When the chucks are properly vertically aligned with the core of the new roll, the arms are driven inwardly to position the chucks within opposite ends of the core. The chucks are then brought into a holding engagement with the core and the carriage is moved upwardly to the second position where the new roll of web goods can then be unwound, while a further new roll of web goods is located at the first roll position. With the exception of locating a new roll of web goods at the first roll position, preparation of the lead end of the new web for joining with the prior web, and removal of cores from the core receiver, the apparatus preferably operates automatically by a program controller or the like. The method performed is also disclosed and claimed.

    • Winders capable of production of consumer rolls of an elongated web. A turret assembly has spindles rotatable about respective spindle axes and movable along a path through a series of index stations. A spindle drive is operable to produce spindle rotation at least at the start-up station and a turret drive is operable to move the spindles through the stations. A roll unloader is adjacent the roll unload station, a core loader is adjacent the core load station, and the loader and unloader each have elements movable parallel to the spindle axes to respectively slide fresh cores over and remove wound rolls from the spindles. A roll starting or tucking assembly comprises an enveloping member mounted adjacent the start-up station and movable across the path between a retracted position and an enveloping position adjacent a spindle at the start-up station, and a web tucking member mounted for movement about a tucking axis between a retracted position and a tucking position. The tucking member when in the tucking position extends between the enveloping member and the spindle at the start-up station, whereby the enveloping and tucking members cause the web to envelop the spindle from opposite sides thereof. Also shown are a core loader in the form of a tray and pushers; a core unloader in the form of grooved rings confined to the spindles and engaged by a stripping fork; simultaneous dependent drive of the loader and unloader; a hopper having a wall moving to and fro through a special path; a triggered idler method of controlling belt drive of the spindles and other important features. In another aspect spindle start-up for webs having perforations is accomplished by a blunt-edged blade which by impact breaks the perforations, with the free end carried about the blade edge into tucked relation. For nonperforated webs there is a severing member downstream from the tucking blade.

    • The invention relates to a winding machine, on which, in alternation, a wound package is wound in a winding position of a spindle, while at the same time a completely wound package is removed from another spindle. With winding machines according to the prior art, the completely wound package must be removed quickly before the other wound package has reached a critical diameter to avoid a collision of their lateral faces. According to the invention, a shifting device shifts the completely wound package before or during the winding process of the wound package such that the axial extensions of the wound packages have no overlap. The collision of the wound packages can thus be prevented as the diameter of the wound package increases, whereby a more compact design with a smaller spacing of the spindles is made possible and an operator has more time to remove the completely wound spool.
