    • A load retainer for use in the void of a cargo container to resist shifting of the cargo in transit has a symmetrical load bearing surface to evenly distribute the force delivered by the cargo. In a first presently preferred embodiment, the load retainer comprises a pair of panels which are coupled together to form an H-shaped device. The panels remain parallel to each other in an expanded load retaining configuration, a collapsed storage configuration and all positions therebetween. A second presently preferred embodiment has a symmetric rectilinear network shaped configuration and includes locking tabs to releasably secure the device in that configuration and resist lateral forces in either direction.

    • Problems of filling dunnage bags for cushioning loads in transit in trailers, railroad cars, and the like, with air are resolved by this improved air filling bag valve and nozzle. In several respects the valves are superior in operation, wasting less air and filling time, and are less tiring for operators to use. For example, this nozzle simply slides laterally into place on the dunnage bag valve stem and locks itself there for hands off filling without manual pressure to press the nozzle axially against dunnage bag valve stems to open them, which is fatiguing with arms outstretched in the crowded spaces available. Damage is reduced that may result to dunnage bags when the filling nozzles are removed against the pressure of adjacent filled dunning bags and are withdrawn. These nozzles are simply pulled out laterally by the attached hose. The novel valve operation provides for opening of the dunnage bag valve stem by means of air pressure rather than manual force heretofore required for moving the valve stem axially into open position and holding it there. The filling valve provides air for filling the dunnage bag at a suitable pressure for rapid filling without danger of bursting the bags. Also the valve is connected to fill the dunnage bag with substantially no loss of air thus making operating costs lower.

    • A void filler device for use in staggering paper rolls during shipment includes a housing member which generally surrounds an inner core. The housing member has a top wall, a bottom wall, and side walls which are attached to the core, and is octagonally shaped. The top and bottom walls of the housing include fold lines around which the walls are folded to collapse the void filler device. The inner core member includes a plurality of flat boards made of laminated paperboard, corrugated cardboard, plastic or other like suitable material. Each of the boards has spaced notches along its length and the boards are interconnected with each other along the notches to form an open cell construction that is expandable and collapsible. The top and bottom walls can include apertures therein for ensuring that the paper rolls are properly aligned.

    • An inflation and deflation device especially adapted for use with dunnage air bags includes a cylindrical valve body possessing a first end mounted for relative rotation within a hollow interior cylindrical portion of a valve actuator. An internal spring biases a valve seat radially outwardly into engagement with an internal cylindrical side wall portion of the valve actuator. Rotation of the valve actuator selectively aligns air exhaust passages of the valve seat and the valve actuator to deflate an associated dunnage air bag. The valve body includes air passages connecting a compressed air source to the dunnage bag for selective inflation and to allow use of the compressed air source to provide a relatively high velocity air stream across an air passage connected to the dunnage bag to facilitate deflation of the bag by inducing a vacuum. One end portion of the valve body opposite the valve actuator includes an axially slidable coupling sleeve for selective engagement with a quick release valve of a dunnage air bag. A plurality of the inflation and deflation valves may be used in a manifold system to allow selective independent inflation and deflation of a plurality of dunnage air bags.

    • An expandable void filler which includes a plurality of expandable hollow, elongated, box-like tubes which can be stacked one on the other and joined together along their common surfaces. Separate interface panels can be sandwiched between the individual tubular members to provide additional lateral compressive strength. The individual tubes are held in the expanded position by individual folding panels which extend inwardly across the interior opening within and have sufficient size to wedge against the opposite sidewall as well as the top and bottom of the structure. These panels alternate from one side of the tube to the other and are staggered so as to not be vertically aligned between the stacked tubular members. A flange member can be attached to the uppermost tube to support the void filler in proper position between the cargo loaded within a transporting vehicle. The double tubular configuration of the present invention can be formed by using a single sheet of material such as corrugated cardboard with the sheet folded along predetermined lateral fold lines to form the complete structure.

    • An air bag for bracing product shipped by a railcar, trailer or overseas container to prevent lengthwise and/or crosswise movement of the cargo. The air bag includes a first sheet of paperboard having parallel side and end edges folded inwardly defining a planar center section and overlapping sides and ends, a second sheet of paperboard of the same dimension as the center section facing the center section and having its marginal side and end edges interposed between the center section and the overlapping side and end sections of the first sheet and glued to the side and end sections, and an inflatable bladder between the two sheets. The bag is constructed of relatively stiff paperboard of a minimum of two laminated plys. Thus, the overlapping side and end edges of the first sheet define with the second sheet a peripheral border of a minimum of six laminated plys of paperboard. The bag has relatively good vertical stiffness when uninflated making it easy to use. The air bag is further characterized by its ease and economy of manufacture.
