    • An airbag apparatus has an airbag formed by sewing fabric portions together at peripheries thereof. A periphery sewn portion of the airbag has two terminals separated from each other. The terminals are formed by leaving sections of the peripheries of the fabric portions unsewn. A surrounding sewn portion is formed about each terminal of the periphery sewn portion. The airbag has a vent hole between the terminals. The opening of the vent hole is defined by vent hole defining sections, each of which is in one of the surrounding sewn portions. Position determining portions are provided in the margin of the airbag. Each surrounding sewn portion is formed in place with reference to the corresponding position determining portion. Each position determining portion is located father from the vent hole in the circumferential direction of the margin than the vent hole defining section of the corresponding surrounding sewn portion.

    • A method is disclosed for making a forced ventilation apparatus (1) for equalizing a pressure difference between a passenger compartment and surroundings of a motor vehicle. The apparatus (1) includes a frame (2) made of hard plastics and delimiting an aperture (3), and a flat ventilation flap (7) made of an elastomer material and secured to the frame (2). A resilient restoring force counteracts opening movement of the ventilation flap (7) from a closed position in which the ventilation flap (7) rests on the frame (2) and closes the aperture (3) in the frame. The method comprises the step of injection-molding the ventilation flap (7) to the frame (2) in an opened position. To this end, the elastomer material is pressed from a free end of the ventilation flap (7) into a common contact area (8) of the ventilation flap (7) with the frame (2).

    • Vehicle passenger collision protection device comprising an inflatable air bag and an acceleration sensor for determining the event of an impending accident and triggering the inflation of the air bag. The acceleration sensor is connected to the air bag inflation pyrotechnic propellant charge which expansion for the inflation of the air bag whereby the propellant is ignited by the appropriate sensor signal. The sensor activates a fan to run at its maximum power output to remove the combustion gases and particulates which escape from the air bag into the passenger space. The fan may be operated as a blower to force fresh air in or as an exhaust fan to suck contaminated air out of the passenger compartment. The fan is preferably the conventional fan associated with the air conditioning system provided in the vehicle. Alternately, a separate fan is connected to the existing ventilation system and may substitute for or supplement the first fan. In another alternative, the sensor controls the opening of electric windows and/or sunroof to assist the fan in rapid fresh air exchange between the outside ambient atmosphere and the passenger compartment. The fan(s), window(s) and/or sunroof can be started prior to the crash by setting the controller to activate them at a lower deceleration value than the pyrotechnic igniter. Auxiliary (battery) power supply means may be provided to insure fan operation in the event the car battery or electrical wiring is damaged in the crash.

    • A pressure relief means is provided in a vehicle equipped with a gas bag restraint system for use in the event the vehicle is involved in an impact. A biased panel, in communication with the passenger compartment and the vehicle surroundings, is held down against the bias of the panel, which urges the panel open. Upon impact of the vehicle, the gas bags inflate, tending to increase the pressure in the passenger compartment. Simultaneously, the panel hinges are detonated, causing the panel to open to prevent the buildup of pressure in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

    • Herein disclosed is a safety device for protecting a vehicle occupant from injury during a collision of a motor vehicle. The safety device uses an inflatable protector bag which is normally stowed in a contracted condition and which is expanded and projected to a protective condition intervening between the vehicle occupant and surrounding structural parts of the vehicle cabin when an impact resulting from the collision is detected. The safety device also uses a blasting means which is adapted to destroy or release a window pane of any of the front windshield, side door windows and a rear window immediately when the inflatable protector bag is expanded. The blasting means thus protects the vehicle occupant from hurting his eardrums and/or intestines due to a sudden rise in the atmospheric pressure in the vehicle cabin. The blasting means will also facilitate the vehicle occupant to get out of the vehicle cabin through the broken windows in the event of the collision.
