    • A flexible die (1) is for use in an embossing apparatus. The embossing apparatus includes a pair of flexible bases (2a, 2b) wound around a pair of respective cylindrical rollers disposed in opposing arrangement. A processed sheet (S) is passed through between the pair of cylindrical rollers so as to carry out Braille embossing. The pair of flexible bases (2a, 2b) include a female flexible base (2a) and a male flexible base (2b) that are configured to mate with one another. The male flexible base (2b) includes male projections (3b) corresponding to a Braille character to be formed on the processed sheet (S). The female flexible base (2a) includes female projections (3b) including depressions (30) configured to fit with the respective male projections (3b).

In contrast to the prior art, the opening angle (α) between the radially aligned adjacent tooth flanks is smaller than the opening angle (β) between the axially aligned adjacent tooth flanks, and the tooth height in the radial direction, measured from the tooth tip to the tooth bottom, is greater than the tooth height in the axial direction measured from the tooth tip to the tooth bottom. This dimensioning and arrangement of the teeth provides an improved gearing with a reduced specific pressure as well as an improved processing of the paper part of the foil that results in its better folding, curling, and tubing behavior.

    • An apparatus for embossing a substrate is provided. The apparatus includes a die with a metal backing layer that carries a polymer layer. The polymer layer has a female pattern formed through laser engraving. The metal backing layer of the die is capable of being magnetically attached to a magnetic cylinder. A counter die is also included and has a metal backing layer that carries a polymer layer. The polymer layer has a male pattern formed thereon through laser engraving. The metal backing layer of the counter die is capable of being magnetically attached to a magnetic cylinder. An alternative apparatus is provided that includes a male and female starting member to aid in aligning the patterns. Another apparatus is included that has male and female register tracts for keeping the die and counter die in register with one another. An associated method is also provided.
