    • A hydraulic hammer includes a powercell housing that defines a hydraulic inlet and a hydraulic outlet. A machine mount that defines a plurality of pin receiving bores is attached to the powercell housing. A work tool is partially received in, and movable with respect to, the powercell housing. A switching spool valve member is positioned in the powercell housing and is movable between a first position and a second position, and includes a control hydraulic surface. A sleeve/liner assembly is positioned in the powercell housing and defines a centerline. A piston with a plurality of hydraulic surfaces is positioned in the sleeve/liner assembly and is movable along the centerline between a first position in contact with the work tool and a second position out of contact with the work tool. The control hydraulic surface of the switching spool valve member is exposed to fluid pressure in a switching passage, which includes a segment defined by the sleeve/liner assembly.

    • A pneumatic tool (20) for impacting a workpiece (22) is provided. The tool (20) comprises a casing (42) defining a chamber (48). A piston (54) is slidable within the chamber (48) along an operational axis (A). An exhaust valve (100) controlled by a pilot valve (200) slides the piston (54) by selectively introducing and releasing pressurized fluid into and out from the chamber (48). The pilot valve (200) includes a valve housing (202) defining a pilot chamber (204) with a plunger (206) slidable in the pilot chamber (204). The pilot valve (200) actuates the tool (20) by quickly releasing pressurized fluid from the exhaust valve (100) to atmosphere. The pilot valve (200) includes a spring-biased annular seal (214) that is releasable from a poppet seat (222) to perform this function.

    • An impact tool has a slidable hammer that is driven by hydraulic oil under pressure inside a chamber. The hydraulic oil is pressurized by a piston driven by compressed gas on the opposite side of the piston from the hydraulic oil. The gas in the gas chamber is compressed by the piston on an initial stroke, and has a large annular chamber holding the gas so that higher average gas pressure can be attained during the power stroke. As the piston is moved to compress the gas, the piston lifts a valve that opens a passage for the hydraulic oil moved by the piston to act on a hammer to impact a breaking tool. The piston is a two part piston that serves to lower the inertia during the final closing of the valve, and thereby reduces impact loads on the valve as it is closed. The valve also is controlled as to its stroke for efficient operation.
