    • A strip welding machine for butt-welding cut surfaces of a strip beginning and a strip end of metal strips to be connected is described. The welding seam is manufactured with a laser welding head. In order to obtain a plane and parallel and gap-free butt joint of the cut surfaces, two separately mounted cutting tools are provided. Each cutting tool has an upper knife and two lower knives, wherein each upper knife is moved virtually without a gap between the two lower knives. Consequently, the cut surfaces at the strip end and the cut surfaces at the strip beginning of the metal strips to be connected are manufactured with equal cutting forces, so that dimensional inaccuracies cannot occur.

    • A blanking shear machine has a rotatable upper turret having a holder for an upper blade. The upper blade has two contiguous sides which form a right angle therebetween. A rotatably mounted lower turret has a holder for a lower blade which corresponds to the upper blade. Means for clamping and positioning a workpiece are provided between the upper and lower turrets. The turrets are rotated to position the blades to provide the desired cut. A plurality of strikers are provided above the upper turret at four positions above the upper blade at which the contiguous sides of the blade are aligned with the X-axis and Y-axis coordinates. Means for actuating the strikers are provided to lower the upper blade to engage the lower blade, shearing the workpiece between the two blades.

    • The overall arrangement of a number of non-overlapping rectangles with constraints on their size and shape, may be generated with relation to a number of objective functions such as, size and shape of the enveloping rectangle, size of an interconnecting network, and distance between pairs of individual rectangles, by first embedding a distance space, reflecting the desired proximity structure, in the plane; next, by refining containment relations, fixing the relative positions of rectangles within such a containment in accordance with the corresponding positions in the embedding; and on the basis thereof estimating the space required for the local realization of the interconnecting network in a configuration satisfying the constraints on the individual rectangles, and optimal with respect to any quasi-concave objective function on the dimensions of the enveloping rectangle that is monotone in its arguments. The method can be implemented even on relatively small computers. Its major application is in the generation of mask patterns of complex semiconductor integrated circuits, especially when a given functional structure must be preserved by containment in rectangles.

    • A sheet metal shears for metal sheets and plates with a highly sensitive surface comprises: a sheet metal infeed platen with a lower blade secured to the edge thereof extending transversely to the direction of sheet advance; a sheet stop disposed in spaced relation from the lower blade in the direction of sheet advance; a movable top blade which in cooperation with the lower blade cuts sheet metal strips from the metal sheet which is advanced over the lower blade up to the sheet stop; and a support means for the sheet metal strips including a movable table which may be extended to support said strips prior to and during the cutting operation in a support plane which is a continuation of the surface of the sheet metal infeed platen and which may be retracted to enable the cut metal strips to fall vertically after they are cut from the sheet. The support table when extended prevents the free edge of the sheet which has been pushed beyond the lower blade from sagging downwardly due to the inherent weight of the sheet. The support table when retracted allows the strips to fall but does not scratch the undersurface of the strips as it retracts.
