摘要： A compact drive mechanism for converting rotary motion to linear motion comprising a casing, gearbox, and beam coupled to the casing and gearbox, wherein the gearbox advances along the casing and the beam extends out from the casing simultaneously in response to rotary input to the gearbox. In its preferred embodiment, the invention comprises the drive mechanism incorporated into a handheld viscous material dispenser, wherein the beam further comprises a plunger face which acts on a viscous material cartridge, such as a caulk cartridge, to eject the viscous material from the cartridge.

The cartridge is easily mounted to the handle portion or removed, whereby the handle portion may be used with a variety of cartridges, each of which may contain a selected material. The handle portion includes a plunger that is moved linearly by actuation of a trigger mechanism, which is engaged by a user's finger. The trigger mechanism is configured to release pressure applied to the plunger quickly upon release of pressure on the trigger and to allow the plunger to move away from the cartridge to ensure release of pressure in the material to be dispensed to prevent dripping.

An actuator is operatively coupled to the support structure and moves through the interior space of the cartridge along the length of the collapsible tube and against one of the generally opposite sidewall portions to compress the one generally opposite sidewall portion against the other sidewall portion along the length and squeeze the viscous fluid from the dispensing end.
