    • A sand filter for use with swimming pools includes a tank that has a hollow interior space and a top diffuser for allowing spent pool water to enter the tank and for distributing the pool water inside the tank. The sand filter also includes filter media formed as a bed of material on a bottom of the tank and also includes laterals that are located under the filter media and allow filtered pool water to exit the tank and flow back to the pool. The filter media includes a bed of sand that is disposed on the bottom of the tank and a layer of perlite material that is disposed on a top surface of the bed of sand. The perlite material is a high flow rate, low density perlite material that only contains a trace amount of floaters.

In a sand filter, back washing is carried out by pumping filtered liquid back through ports 38 in the side wall 12 of the filter tank by means of a back washing shoe device 74 which slides along the outer surface of the wall engaging the ports 38 successively and which is suspended from a moving carriage 46 spring means 82 (Fig. 8) being provided for urging the shoe into close conformity with the wall surface to so prevent leakage. The shoe 74 is connected by conduits 68 to a pump 54, a pivoted arm 60 depending from the carriage supporting the shoe 74 by a chain 78 against vertical movement. The carriage also carries a hood 88 with a pump 94 therein which removes the upwardly flowing wash liquid and contaminant therein. The movement of the carriage commences when the accumulation of unfiltered liquid reaches level control 122, and the carriage then moves to and from over the sand bed 34 until the liquid level drops to control 128 which then stops the carriage when it next reaches one end of the tank. The filter bed is divided transverselly by dividers. A series of U-shaped scarifying means are carried by rods within the hood and agitate the bed to a uniform depth. The carriage movement is reversed when a switch carried by the carriage engages members on the side wall adjacent the ends of the wall. The switch is connected in a circuit of a control box 124 together with the controls 122 and 128, the control 128 when activated by drop of liquid level triggering the circuit and stopping the carriage at the wall end after the reverse switch has been tripped ready for recommencement.

A multi-stage, spring-loaded control valve assembly controls the communication of fluid to a regeneration control turbine and includes a piston head and a relatively movable seat-carrying stem. A spring urges the stem away from the piston head such that initial movement of the head compresses the spring but does not produce movement in the seat. Sufficient movement of the piston head produces movement in the seat, thereby causing the seat to open pressure.

After a predetermined relative movement of the piston head with respect to the seat, further movement produces movement in the seat, thereby causing the seat to disengage its associated sealing surface, whereupon the spring produces further opening movement in the seat. The present invention improves the operation of the control valve assembly, even in water treatment applications where source water is supplied at a relatively low pressure.

    • A filtration and backwash system for a water source such as a swimming pool is provided including a fluid source, a pump, a filter and a specially designed five-port valve which is easily adaptable for automatic use in the filtration mode and in the backwash mode. The valve uses a rotatable deflector plate which is positioned to divert the fluid in one direction in the valve for the filtration process and is positioned to divert the fluid in the other direction in the valve for the backwash process. An automatic timing device is also provided and is particularly suitable for use in conjunction with the valve whereby no manual intervention or electronic means is needed to change the valve from the filtering mode to the backwash mode or vice versa. The timing device automatically senses the pressure buildup in the filtration system due to accumulation of debris in the filter and automatically changes the valve from the filtration mode to backwash mode when a predetermined system pressure is exceeded. The timing device then gradually returns the valve to its initial filtering position to continue the filtering process.

    • An improved method of cleansing a filter bed is herein provided utilizing a backwash pump (12) having an inlet line (14) and an outlet line (16). The improved method and system includes two cycle operations. Initially, the filter bed is backwashed to remove contaminants from the filter bed with the backwash pump (12) drawing liquid from an effluent channel (26). A portion of the liquid passing on backwash pump outlet line (26) is passed through a bypass adjustment valve (34) for egress on an outlet line (38) for recirculation to the effluent channel (26). The second stage of the cleansing operation is through a purging cycle where the filter bed is purged subsequent to the backwashing operation for removal of further contaminants from the filter bed. In the purging cycle, a closed loop system is formed between the backwash pump (12) and the backwash shoe (28) with a portion of liquid being diverted through a purge adjustment valve member (44) for egress on an outlet line (46) external to the system or to a separate filter member.
