    • A medical device for assisting in the maintaining of an opening created in the thoracic diaphragm is provided. The medical device comprises a diaphragm contacting part adapted to be placed in contact with the thoracic diaphragm and thereby assist in the maintaining of the opening created in the thoracic diaphragm. A pericardial drainage device for draining a fluid from the pericardium of a patient is further provided. The drainage device comprises a conduit; the conduit comprises a first and second section. At least a portion of the first section is adapted to receive a fluid inside of the pericardium. The second section of the conduit is adapted to be positioned outside of the pericardium of a patient and enable the exhaust of said fluid received from said pericardium through at least a portion of said second section.

    • A primary scotch yoke and a secondary scotch yoke are coupled in opposing arrangement and rigidly attached to a linearly reciprocating element. Each scotch yoke includes a rotary actuator with a cam follower and a yoke attached to the reciprocating element. Each yoke has a cam with an open gap through which the follower may be disengaged from the cam and stopped to an idle position. The follower of the secondary scotch yoke is kept idle in a position similarly disengaged from its cam. A controller detects a failure in the primary scotch yoke, disengages the cam follower of the primary yoke from its cam, and energizes the secondary scotch yoke, thereby causing its cam follower to engage its yoke and continue to provide uninterrupted motion to the reciprocating element, in particular the portable pneumatic pump driving an artificial heart.

    • An actuation mechanism for assisting the operation of the natural heart has a varying shape for deforming the heart. In one embodiment, a plurality of links (6) articulates with respect to each other for varying the shape of the actuation mechanism. The plurality of links (6) is configured for being positioned proximate to an outer surface of the heart for deforming the heart by varying the shape of the actuation mechanism. In another embodiment, a jacket (51) for coupling with an outer surface of the heart has a tether (50) coupled to successive sections of the jacket. The tether (50) is operable to be translated with respect to the jacket sections to vary the shape of the jacket (51) for deforming the heart. In another embodiment, a plurality of concentric ring structures (81-84) are coupled together to move with respect to each other in a concentric fashion. A movement mechanism coupled to the rings (81-84) is operable to vary their positions with respect to each other to vary the overall shape for deforming the heart.
