    • A rotary internal combustion engine capable of operating under compression ignition, comprises a cylinder bore in a stator sealed between parallel end walls, an engine shaft journaled in the end walls, concentric with the cylinder bore, an air-compressing rotor keyed eccentrically to the engine shaft, the rotor generally annular, traveling clockwise, a wiper vane across its head sucking in air through a one-way inlet port in the perimeter of the cylinder bore, at the same time compressing the air ahead of it which was inhaled during the preceding revolution. The rotor compresses air into a combustion-expansion chamber formed inside the elbow of an L-shaped abutment coextensive with the end walls, the abutment with a clockwise end pivoted in a shallow seat in the face of the cylinder at about 2:00 o'clock, the base of the abutment, a plate generally rectangular, reaching counter-clockwise, thence turning upward to form an arcuate extension to reciprocate in a channel in the stator head, a fixed casting adjacent the base of the channel closing the upper part of the combustion-expansion chamber to serve as a compression head, the base of the abutment riding on the eccentric rotor. A fuel injector is positioned to inject fuel into the combusion chamber when the rotor head is at approximately top center, and a glow plug is positioned to facilitate ignition. Expanding combustion gases drive the abutment downward in a power stroke, forcing the eccentric rotor to rotate. Two ports vent the engine, one a horizontal port through the stator opposite the combustion chamber, the other in the outer end of the channel. When the abutment drops to the end of the downward stroke, at the end of the expansion stroke, its upper end uncovers the horizontal port and at the same time withdraws out of the channel, the spent gases flowing out through both ports. The eccentric rotor lifts the abutment on the upward stroke, re-covering the ports on the upward compression stroke.

A first abutment with one end pivotally anchored in the stator near 10:00 o'clock, the other end projecting clockwise and free to swing vertically in the cylinder space, seals the space between the cylinder and the piston from end wall to end wall, forming the counter-clockwise end of a combustion-expansion chamber. A second abutment, pivotally anchored in the stator near 2:00 o'clock, its free end projecting counter-clockwise and sealing the space between the cylinder and piston from end wall to end wall, forms the clockwise end of the combustion-expansion chamber. Both abutments are spring biased downward toward the piston. The combustion chamber, centered near 12:00 o'clock, comprises a shallow arcuate cavity adjacent the path of the piston, opening into and combining with the cylinder space. Fuel injection means for the invention engine is mounted preferably in the engine head. An air intake port is positioned in the vicinity of 3:00 o'clock to admit air into a compression chamber formed ahead of the rotating eccentric piston, the air pressure to lift the free end of the first abutment to allow the piston head to sweep a charge of air into the combustion chamber. Exhaust means comprises preferably at least one poppet valve per cylinder positioned in the engine head.

    • The invention engine comprises a compressor with a rotary piston in a cylinder bore in a stator and a U-shaped box-like combustion-expansion compartment, conveniently called a U-box, immediately above and riding on the rotary piston, the U-box and the compressor unit contained between the same parallel end walls. The rotary piston is eccentrically mounted on a shaft which is concentric with the cylinder bore and is supported in bearings in the end walls. A wiper blade is fitted in a groove across the piston head to yieldably sweep the cylinder bore to generate a suction stroke behind it, drawing in air via a one-way inlet port in the perimeter of the cylinder, and a compression stroke ahead of it to compress the air drawn in during the preceding suction stroke. The U-box is in the shape of a rectangular plate bent upward at two places to form two parallel vertical sides of equal height and a base plate between them. It is closed on its ends by the end walls, between which it reciprocates; it is closed above by a fixed casting to form a compression head; and its vertical sides recede into channels in the stator as the piston forces it upward on the upward compression stroke, the piston at the same time compressing air into the U-box via one-way inlet ports in the box's counter-clockwise face. A combustion-expansion chamber is formed between the inside of the U-box and the compression head. A fuel injector and a glow plug ignite a fuel charge when the piston head is near top center, and expanding gases force the U-box downward from the compression head, causing the eccentric piston to rotate. Parts through the stator on a level with the combustion chamber vent the engine as the vertical sides of the U-box drop downward past them and uncover them, at the end of the power stroke, the U-box sides re-covering them on their next upward compression stroke.
