    • A mobile telecommunications network and method of operation that includes establishing a first user plane connection between a telecommunications device registered with the network and a network gateway device of the network via a first access point; providing the telecommunications device with a token using the first user plane connection; establishing a second user plane connection between the telecommunications device and the network gateway device via a second access point by using the token information to validate the telecommunications device; and, subsequent to establishment of and corresponding to the second user plane connection, establishing a control plane connection between the telecommunications device and the network gateway device via the second access point. The token includes information indicative to the network that the telecommunications device has authorization to send a quantity of data to the network gateway device prior to full conventional authentication of the telecommunications device.

    • A GSM or UMTS mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. In addition to the conventional radio access network comprising macro base station, one or more additional access points are provided. The access point is connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. A subscriber may be provided with a designated “home” access point to provide coverage in their premises. Arrangements are described which will tend to reduce the likelihood that reselection to the macro base station while radio coverage is available from the home access point.

    • In a telecommunications network including a mobile terminal and a base station associated with a plurality of antennas, with each antenna configured to transmit the signal with a time offset relative to the other antenna or antennas, an engine for controlling a signal to be transmitted wirelessly from the base station towards the mobile terminal, the engine being configured to receive one or more parameter measurements relevant to the mobile terminal; and use the one or more parameter measurements to adjust the time offset of at least one of the antennas in order to adapt the signal transmission dependent upon the mobile terminal's instantaneous circumstances. Ideally the engine is configured to receive the one or more parameter measurements relating to a plurality of different mobile terminals, and independently adjust the time offset for each of the plurality of different mobile terminals, depending upon the one or more applicable parameter measurements.

    • Providing a mobile terminal with system information which enables the terminal to access one of the cells of a cellular telecommunications system includes transmitting from the telecommunications system to all terminals within the cell, including the terminal, a system information indicator that makes available to the terminal system information to provide access to the system. The system information indicator is transmitted on the broadcast channel (BCH). The system information indicator may be a sub-set of the system information conventionally transmitted on the BCH but which is sufficient to allow the mobile terminal to access the network and obtain in the downlink further system information. Alternatively, the information transmitted in the BCH may be a profile index value which directs the mobile terminal to retrieve from a store of the mobile terminal system information pre-stored on the mobile terminal.
