    • An automobile door receiver module (30) and a plurality of keychain fob transmitter units (16) contain identification numbers, secret initial values, and secret feedback masks so as to authenticate encrypted messages from any of the assigned fobs, indicative of commands registered by closing switches on the fob. Each fob is synchronized with the receiving module by means of a truly random number concatenated with a secret initial value and encrypted, through a linear feedback shift register or other operations. A second secret initial value is encrypted and command bits are exclusive ORed into the low order bit positions; the two encrypted numbers are concatenated and encrypted to form a key word which is transmitted with the fob ID. Synchronization includes decrypting to recover the truly random number and the secret initial value concatenated therewith; the truly random number is compared with previously received random numbers in order to avoid copying of recently transmitted synchronization commands. Successive lock-related commands utilize the number encrypted from the truly random number and the second secret initial value as starting values, employing a pseudorandom number of encryption iterations. A half-second delay between responses mitigates gaining access through numerical trials. An authenticated panic alarm command operates the headlights and horn of the vehicle but does not alter the synchronization.

    • A current measuring apparatus measures current flowing through a phase winding of a switched reluctance motor while dissipating very little power. The apparatus includes a control for controlling the current flowing through the winding. A gate is operatively connected to the control for switching the current flowing through the winding. The arrangement is such that in a first mode of the gate, the current flows through the phase winding. In a second mode of the gate, flow of the current through the winding is inhibited. The gate includes a sense means for sensing a fraction of the current when the gate is in the first mode thereof. A resistor of relatively high resistance is electrically connected in series with the sense means such that a voltage drop occurs across the resistor when the gate is in the first mode. The voltage drop signal is fed back to the control so that dependent on the signal, the current flowing through the phase winding of the motor is maintained in order to maximize motor efficiency.

    • Bearing systems, such as magnetic bearings, are widely used today in a variety of applications. All bearing systems are, however, subject to failure. Therefore, backup bearing systems are often utilized in conjunction with a main bearing system in order to provide backup to the main bearings if they should fail. The backup bearing system for the re-centering of magnetic bearings includes a first conical member disposed about an axis and having at least one bearing disposed substantially therein; a second conical member spaced from the first conical member and disposed about the axis, the second conical member having at least one bearing disposed substantially therein; and an actuator assembly spaced from the second conical member and bearing in a first or operative position. The actuator assembly acts to move the second conical member and bearings disposed therein between the first, operative position where the backup bearing system is operating to re-center the magnetic bearings, to a second, inoperative position, when the magnetic bearings are once again operating.

    • A control is provided for allowing a user to actuate various home security systems such as garage door openers, home alarm systems, lights, etc., remotely. A transmitter is provided with encryption logic such that its signal is not easily duplicated. In a preferred embodiment, the transmitter is provided with separate channels for each of several systems which are to be actuated by the transmitter. Receivers are provided with logic to recognize the encrypted signal. The encrypted signal varies sequentially on each actuation of the transmitter. In another preferred feature of this invention, add-on receivers may be incorporated into the existing circuitry for the systems that are to be controlled by the inventive transmitter. In this way, existing systems may be utilized with the inventive transmitter.

    • A family of retainer clip holders can each be adjusted to properly position a retainer clip at a desired location on a wire harness. In the past, it has sometimes been complicated to properly position a retainer clip holder relative to the base, and mount the holder base on a jig for assembling wire harnesses. There have typically been too many fixtures required on the jig. Thus, the prior art has attempted to assemble the retainer clips by individually tailoring hundreds of retainer clip holders for the particular orientation demanded by the particular retainer clip application. The inventive family of retainer clip holders allows the selection of the proper adjustable retainer clip holders and the adjustment of that retainer clip holder to accommodate the particular retainer clip application demanded. In this way, the invention replaces the hundreds of previously required holders with seven basic tools.

    • The present invention hybrid junction box 11 joins two or more external electric current carrying members within a vehicle electrical system 14 and is comprised of a protective cover 31 and a protective housing 39 which define a casing having a cavity therewithin where a plurality of internal electric current carrying circuits are juxtaposed. Moreover, a junction box of the present invention provides for use of a rigid printed circuit board 33 and/or a busbar and insulator assembly 35 in combination with either or both the conductive deposited metal traces 67 and the flexible printed circuit board 37. The present invention is also comprised of various methods for electrically connecting together the various combinations of the preceding internal electric current carrying circuits. The present invention further uses a jumper box interconnect 193 to provide a programmed function within the busbar and insulator assembly 35.

    • An interlock plate is received on an electrical connector which includes a latch to be received in a channel on a mating electrical connector. The plate is selectively movable between locked and unlocked positions, and prevents movement of the latch outwardly of the channel when in the locked position. The electrical connection is made by connecting the two electrical connectors, with the latch moving into the channel. During this initial connection, the plate is received on the electrical connector in the unlocked position. The plate is then moved to the locked position, where it remains while the electrical connection is maintained. At that position, abutments on the plate and the connector prevent movement of the latch outwardly of the channel. Should it be desired to disconnect the electrical connection, the plate is initially moved back to its unlocked position, and the connectors may then be separated. The plate is configured such that it will force the latch into the channel when moved to the locked position should the latch not be fully received within the channel. In addition, the plate prevents connection of the first and second electrical connectors when in the locked position. Finally, structure on the electrical connector and plate insures that the plate is securely retained on the electrical connector during assembly and shipment.
