    • A mechanical down jar and method for its use in releasing stuck objects within a well bore and for conducting other downhole servicing operations. The mechanical down jar mechanism incorporates a tubular body having fixed anvils and telescoping mandrels at each end, the lower of which is connected to the stuck object. An internal load spring is released upon application of predetermined downward force to the housing by a firing lug and firing ring release mechanism having an adjustable release force. When released the lower anvil of the housing is rapidly moved downwardly by the force of the load spring and impacts with significant force against the force transmitting sub of the lower mandrel thus transmitting downwardly directed shock force to the stuck object.

    • A jar tool for inclusion into a well fishing operating string which provides resilient tensional stretch to operate the tool. The tool is adapted to compress an upper release spring to store energy corresponding to tensional force in the operating string force. A release latching lug array connects the spring to a central mandrel having an impact hammer. The tool housing forms an impact anvil. The spring is compressed to a designated compressional force by the distance that the latch lug array is moved in an adjustable latch release sleeve before suddenly releasing the spring from the mandrel. The tension in the operating string then pulls the mandrel hammer into jarring impact with the housing anvil. Provision is made for designating this pre-release movement of the latching lug array and also provides apparatus for adjusting the distance of the pre-release movement and thereby the compressional force imparted into the spring.

    • A control mechanism for a boat having a seat assembly to support a pilot provides an outboard motor which is directionally controlled by extension and retraction of a control cable with the control mechanism having a pedal which is generally planar on its upper surface receptive of the pilot's foot. A bracket mounts the pedal at a location below the seat assembly so that the user occupying the seat can position one of his feet on the pedal. A pair of switch surfaces are disposed on opposite sides of the pedal, each surface extending above the pedal surface so that lateral movement of the user's foot when positioned on the pedal can contact one of the switch surfaces. A switch associated with each switch surface can then be activated for directionally moving the outboard motor into different positions responsive to pressure applied to one or other of the switch surfaces applied by the edge of the user's foot. In one embodiment, the pedal and motor are remotely placed with respect to one another, and the pedal "communicates" with the trolling motor using radio waves. In that embodiment, a transmitter is carried by the foot pedal or similar pilot-operated control, and a receiver positioned near the motor activates a reversible motor to steer the trolling motor, preferably by cable extension/retraction.

    • An apparatus for circulating high temperature air at approximately 20,000 cubic feet per minute through an enclosed room in which fruit are stacked in sweat boxes on pallets. A fan draws the heated air from a heat source into a plurality of inlet ports at the bottom of the housing. A damper position at each of the inlet ports deflects the hot air entering the drying room upwardly between the stacks of containers in the drying room and the corresponding side wall of the housing towards said top, the hot air passing between the top of the stacks of containers in the room and the top of the housing, and down between the stacks of containers in the room and the opposite side wall of the housing. A recirculating port in the first-named side wall through which the fan draws the air from the opposite side wall between the individual containers in the stacks and across the fruit within the containers and back to the inlet of said source.

    • A hybrid stepping motor unit includes a stepper-type primary motor and a secondary motor. The rotor shafts of the stepper-type primary motor and the secondary motor are connected to a common output shaft. The stepper-type primary motor is energized in response to an electrical command signal from an external source, such as a computer. When the stepper-type primary motor is energized, the stepper-type primary motor produces torque and attempts to drive the load combination of the interconnected rotor shafts, the common output shaft, and any mechanical load on the common output shaft, such as a machine tool component. This produces a reaction torque on the stepper-type primary motor. A transducer converts the reaction torque into an electrical control signal. The secondary motor is energized in response to the electrical control signal from the transducer. When the secondary motor is energized, the secondary motor produces torque which augments the torque of the stepper-type primary motor to drive the load circulation. After the rotor shaft of the stepper-type primary motor rotates a predetermined angular distance, a reaction torque on the stepper-type primary motor is no longer produced. The electrical control signal from the transducer ceases, and the secondary motor is de-energized. Consequently, application of torque to the common output shaft is discontinued. The hybrid stepping motor unit responds to successive electrical command signals in like manner to drive the common output shaft a preselected angular distance in response to each electrical command signal.

    • A releasable spear adapted to be run on a wireline or a tubing string, as desired, incorporates an elongate body and an external slidable sleeve. The sleeve is forced downwardly by a compressed spring at the top end of the sleeve. The sleeve supports a pair of internal projecting lugs which are received in an external groove formed in a tubular member. The lugs and groove function as a cam and cam follower mechanism controlling upward and downward movement. The body terminates in an elongate tapered plug. The lower end of the sleeve incorporates a set of collet fingers which have external upwardly facing serrations to lock on the interior of a fish. The external sleeve incorporates a protruding shoulder which catches the upper end of the fish. The cam and cam follower mechanism controls axial movement of the elongate tapered plug to force the collet fingers outwardly to engage, or cause them to deflect inwardly to disengage a fish.
