    • A device for emptying horizontally arranged coke furnace batteries comprises a coke gas emission hood which includes an upper portion with a sealing flap part which is adapted to be aligned with and sealed with a coke guide car which is oriented at the entrance of one of the furnaces which are to be emptied. The emission hood includes a lower part which advantageously has an opening at at least one end to permit entry and passage of a coke car along horizontally extending trackways defined on a lower portion of the hood structure. The hood structure may be moved along a trackway which extends parallel to an operating stage trackway for a coke cake guide car and the upper sealing portion of the hood may be aligned with the guide car which in turn may be aligned with selective coke furnaces to permit discharge of the coke portion of the hood and downwardly into the coke car which is positioned therebelow. The coke car may be shifted along the hood and/or the hood itself may be shifted in order to permit discharge of the coke after quenching in the quenching tower.

    • Continuous treating process for scrubbing ammonia rich coke oven gases containing H2S involves regenerating ammonia rich H2S wash liquor in a deacidifier and distilling the ammonia from the NH3 scrubber in a still. The cyclic process is carried out in two cycles: a first cycle in which regenerated, cooled, aqueous ammoniacal solution is circulated from the sump of the deacidifier to about the center or the upper parts of the H2Sscrubber, and from the sump of the H2S-scrubber back to the upper part of the deacidifier; and a second, hot cycle in which the regenerated aqueous ammoniacal solution issuing from the sump of the deacidifier is circulated to the upper part of the H2Sscrubber.

    • An automatic device for engaging and then subsequently turning and lifting off a cover for the charging shaft of a coking oven includes a horizontally extending support which is carried on a rotary column and which includes a drive motor thereon for rotating an engagement member through a clutch mechanism which causes the engagement and centering of a shaft cover and its rotation on a shaft seat in order to facilitate the lifting of the cover upwardly and away from a top opening of a charging shaft for a coking oven furnace. In one embodiment, the device includes a clutch mechanism which provides a centering of the cover and the holding of the cover in a centered position while it is rotated in order to facilitate the precise replacement of the cover in the centered position. The support is carried on a column which is mounted on a support or frame for rotary movement and which is guided for up and down movement in order to facilitate the lifting and lowering of the cover. The rotary movement of the column is effected by engagement of a roller follower of the column with a control cam which provides an accurate rotary shifting movement of the support during the upward and downward movement of the column. In another embodiment of the invention the engagement means for the cover on the support includes a magnet which may be energized to lift the cover upwardly instead of having a rotary cam arm which engages into open ends of oppositely directed angles carried on the cover''s top.
