    • A lateral displacement shock absorbing material includes a material consisting of a plurality of elongated tubular impact absorbing members, each having an axis of elongation. The axes of elongation of the respective tubular members are parallel to one another. The tubular members are retained with their axes in parallel relation by virtue of webbing, laterally extending from the sides of each tubular member, and interconnecting them together. Each of the tubular members consists of an outer surface made up of two frustoconical surfaces with their larger diameter ends abutting one another and their smaller diameter ends facing away from one another. Each tubular member includes a passageway defined by two frustoconical shapes with the smaller diameter ends abutting one another, and the larger diameter ends facing away from one another and defining the openings of each passageway. The material may be made of thermoplastics including polypropylene, urethanes, and rubber. In operation, upon impact, the side walls of the tubular members bulge or displace laterally to absorb impacts. The taper of the walls and the open space within the tubular members allow the energy absorbing material to displace laterally allowing a greater range of travel.

    • A fastening element for securing a facemask to an outer shell of a protective helmet is disclosed. The fastening element comprises an end portion defining an aperture and a first tab and a second tab each flexibly connected to the end portion. The first tab defines a first tab aperture and the second tab defines a second tab aperture. The first tab and second tab also define a slot therebetween. A combination comprising a facemask and a fastening element is also disclosed. The facemask can comprise at least one substantially horizontal member and at least one substantially vertical member intersecting the substantially horizontal member. The fastening element is connectable to the facemask. Also disclosed is a helmet comprising an outer shell, a facemask and a fastening element for securing the outer shell to the facemask.

    • The eye guard, while complying with ASTM F803-03, has been ergonometrically designed to comfortably fit on the user's face, and to provide openings for the eyes allowing clear vision while at the same time protecting the eyes from impacts from a lacrosse ball. The eye openings are completely open and have dimensions intended to preclude a lacrosse ball from passing therethrough. The upper edges of the eye openings are displaced rearwardly with respect to the lower edges a sufficient distance to preclude a lacrosse ball from striking the two edges simultaneously in a direction that could possibly cause an eye impact. That displacement is specifically devised to cause a lacrosse ball striking one or the other of the edges to be deflected away from the eyes of the player. The upper edge of the eye openings also defines the lower edge of a visor surface. That visor surface transitions from the openings to the rearward edge of the eye guard where it engages the face of the user above the eyes. Below the eye openings, additional openings are provided that are shaped to be aesthetically pleasing and also create a nose engaging portion designed to surround upper portions of the nose. Temples are preferably molded of a flexible material and may include a unique attachment device for an elastic band used to hold the eye guard on the head of the user.

    • Lateral displacement shock absorbing arrays include features allowing them to be effectively installed in environments including helmets having arcuate surfaces. Slotted webbing between adjacent tubes permits their respective axes to tilt with respect to one another to accommodate helmet shape. In this way, the slotted webbing permits each tube to assume an orientation with its axis perpendicular to a tangent to the outer surface of the helmet at that location so that the tube is best aligned with likely impacts. Plural arrays may be assembled together in numerous ways including using a piece of material to which they may be affixed through any one of numerous ways including tabs and slots, posts and holes, stapling, adhesives, laminating, and integrally molding the arrays and material as a one piece assembly. A variety of peripheral shapes for the tubes of the arrays are also contemplated as are numerous materials of construction.
