    • A bit retaining assembly for retaining a bit in a rotary tool, in particular a router such as a hand-held router, a table-mounted router, a pocket cutter, a laminate trimmer, a rotary cutout tool, or the like employs a planetary gear system for multiplying the torque applied to clamp the bit within a collet. The bit retaining assembly comprises a chuck for coupling the bit retaining assembly to the rotor shaft of the rotary tool. A collet is disposed in the chuck for receiving the bit. A nut threaded onto the chuck compresses the collet about the bit to secure the bit within the collet. A planetary gear system transmits torque applied to a housing member to the nut for rotating the nut on the chuck. Preferably, the planetary gear system multiplies the torque transmitted to the nut so that the torque transmitted to the nut is greater than the torque applied to the housing member.

    • Improvements made to a router relate to a sub-base alignment system. In a preferred embodiment, the alignment system comprises a plurality of raised bosses which are located on the sub-base at known locations and which engage a plurality of recessed cavities in the router base. Alternatively, the raised bosses may be placed on the router base and the cavities may be located in the sub-base, or a combination of boss and cavity locations may be used. The router base is positioned at a known locations relative to the center of rotation of the router bit. For example, in the plunge router shown, the base is coupled to plunge guide posts, which themselves are coupled to the motor housing at known locations. The coupling of the raised bosses with the recessed cavities places the sub-base at a known position relative to the router base. In such a configuration, the outer edge of the sub-base, which may be used to guide the router when making a cut, is held at a known position relative to the center of rotation of the router chuck, thus enabling the precise guidance of the router relative to a guide member.

    • The present invention relates to methods employing internal combustion fastener driving tool for driving a fastener and for starting a flooded tool. A method for starting a flooded tool includes: compressing the tool against an object to slide a piston axially within a piston housing to purge fuel and air from a combustion chamber, and to close a conduit between a metering chamber and a source of gaseous fuel; latching closed the conduit; drawing air into the combustion chamber by releasing the tool from the object; purging the air and any residual mixture of fuel and air from the combustion chamber by compressing the tool; repeating the drawing and purging steps one or more times; and opening the fluid communication between the fuel source and the combustion chamber. A method of employing the tool to drive a fastener includes: positioning a fastener within the tool for driving by the tool; providing a source of gaseous fuel to power the internal combustion driven piston; positioning the tool on a workpiece at a position for driving a fastener; compressing the tool body against the workpiece to slide a piston axially within a piston housing and to move a lock out plate to allow actuation of a trigger for firing the tool; actuating the trigger to fire the tool and drive the fastener; and releasing the tool from the workpiece and expanding the compressed tool.
