    • Apparatus and method for inspecting the finish of transparent containers, particularly glass containers, which include facility for directing diffused light energy laterally through the container finish as the container is rotated about its central axis. A camera includes a plurality of light sensitive elements disposed in a linear array angulated with respect to the container axis to view the external and internal finish wall surfaces, the latter through the open container mouth. Individual elements of the camera linear array are sampled by an information processor at increments of container rotation, and corresponding data indicative of light intensity at each element is stored in an array memory as a combined function of element number and scan increment. Such data is compared following completion of container rotation to standard data indicative of acceptable container finish, and a reject signal is generated if such comparison exceeds an operator adjustable threshold.

    • A tamper indicating hermetically sealed package comprising a container having a neck with an opening and a closure. The container includes a first annular bead at the upper end adjacent the opening and a second annular bead spaced axially from the first annular bead and having a greater diameter than the first bead. The closure is made of plastic and comprises a base wall and a peripheral skirt. The base wall includes an annular bead on the internal surface thereof and the peripheral skirt includes an interrupted annular bead spaced axially from the base wall. A sealing gasket is cast in situ in the channel defined by the annular bead on the base wall and the peripheral skirt and extends to the interrupted annular bead on the skirt. A tamper indicating band is connected along a weakened line to the peripheral skirt and includes an interrupted annular bead that is adapted to engage the second bead on the container.

    • A cylindrical vacuum drum for carrying a label held to its surface by vacuum past an adhesive applying roll to a position where the label will touch a container and the container will be rolled along the drum surface to thereby apply the label about the container. The drum is formed of metal and is mounted for rotation about its vertical axis. The drum has a rubberlike covering thereover with at least two raised areas in the cover, which underlie the leading and trailing edge of a label that is at a greater radius than the rest of the surface. These are the areas which serve to press the label against the adhesive roll or solvent applying gravure roll. These areas have very slightly depressed zones forming slight steps just in advance thereof with a row of vacuum ports extending through the cover at the base of said steps to effectively hold the leading edge of the label down and allow the trailing edge to bend upwardly away from the outer surface of the drum. Additionally, replaceable insert strips are provided for the trailing edge of each raised pad that underlies the trailing edge of the labels so that this area which exhibits the most wear can be replaced rather than require replacing the entire drum.

    • A system for metering and dispensing product from a container is illustrated in an embodiment in which a closure, for a container having a neck portion, has a discharge port with a spout pivotally supported in the port. The spout has a top wall which closes the port and has spaced opposed depending side walls which extend into the container when the spout is in the closed position. The side walls have matching curvilinear edges. A valve member is supported in the container so that the spout can be moved into and out of registration with it. The valve member has a curvilinear surface that conforms to and mates with the curvilinear edges of the side walls when they are in registration to define a closed dispensing chamber having a predetermined measure of product therein. The spout is filled when out our registration with the valve member.

    • A method and apparatus for maintaining critical alignments between the neck of a container and closure application stations. The embodiment disclosed illustrates apparatus for handling containers during the process of filling and applying closures to the filled containers. A star wheel with outwardly opening container body pockets and a container guide rail receives filled containers as they are descending from a filling position, and moves the containers through closure pickup and pre-tightening apparatus to a closure applicating machine. A container neck guide receives and guides the necks of filled containers along a predetermined path through the pickup and pre-tightening stations. The neck guide, pickup and pre-tightening stations are supported on the same structure to insure that the predetermined alignment positions are maintained.
