摘要： This invention relates to a method of sewing large area sewing material consisting of plural and at least two layers, of which at least one layer is formed of an elastical material, for instance foamed material, wherein said layers are fed to the sewing unit in a superposed relationship and wherein the layer of elastical material is fed to the sewing unit in an unexpanded and preferably bulged condition and is stitched together with the layer formed of non-elastical material. Such a method offers the advantage that the formation of folds in the stitched product is prevented in a simple and inexpensive manner.

A cam, link and linkage system is provided for selectively driving the gripper shaft to selectively (a) move the gripper (7) a predetermined distance through which the cutting blade is inoperative and (b) move the gripper a further distance beyond the predetermined distance through which the cutting blade is operative to cut-off the thread. A stop boss is also provided adjacent the gripper bend to prevent the thread from being cut during motion of the gripper the predetermined distance.

The apparatus comprises a conveyor mechanism, a sewing device consisting of a sewing unit with at least two needles, a gripper box with grippers allocated to said needles, a tape-like element, a cutting element, and a storage mechanism. By guiding the sewing unit along a first guide means, and by guiding the gripper box along a second guide means, and synchronizing both, material can be cut and sewn on the rim without tension, thereby improving current methods by avoiding sewing inaccuracies and eliminating their subsequent remedies.
