    • A navigation system that uses a method for transmitting the location of a vehicle to a location remote from the vehicle is provided. The method includes determining a location of the vehicle relative to a road network defined as a first location, and determining a change in the location of the vehicle relative to the road network defined as a second location. The first location may be a first street while the second location is a second street different that the first street. The navigation system then communicates the location of the vehicle to the remote location when vehicle reaches the second location. In another aspect of the present invention, the method includes determining a location of the vehicle relative to a road network defined as a first location. A new location of the vehicle is determined relative to the road network and is defined as a second location. The first location of the vehicle is communicated to the remote location at a first frequency, and the second location of the vehicle is communicated to the remote location at a second frequency, which is different from the first frequency.

    • A navigation system includes an operator interface module (OIM) including a display and keypad. A computer module (computer module) includes a CPU, map database and the motion and position sensors. A docking station is fixedly mounted in each of a plurality of vehicles. The docking station includes an electrical connector connected to the vehicle power supply and an electrical connector connected to a GPS antenna and an electrical connector connected to a display extension harness. The computer module and OIM are transportable among each of the vehicles. The computer module slides into the docking station and simultaneously makes electrical contact with the vehicle power supply, GPS antenna and display extension harness. The OIM is connected to the display extension harness, thereby connecting the OIM to the computer module. The OIM and computer module are thus transportable among multiple vehicles having the appropriate docking station.

    • A navigation system is used to assist a user in proceeding from a current location to a desired destination. The navigation system includes an input device for selecting a desired destination from a database of roads. The input device can also be used to specify a vehicle type, such as a truck, car, or bus, for example. The navigation system also includes a processor for determining a route from a current vehicle position to the desired destination in the database, where the route includes a plurality of maneuvers. An output device indicates a maneuver instruction to a driver at an interval before an upcoming maneuver along the route. The interval is determined based upon vehicle type such that the maneuver instruction will be communicated to the driver sooner for a larger vehicle than for a smaller vehicle. This allows the driver to have an adequate amount of time to position the vehicle to perform the upcoming maneuver.

    • The invention relates to a vehicle location display for a navigation system. The vehicle location display operates in either a graphical display mode or a textual display mode. In the graphical display mode the vehicle location display automatically scales the display to display the current location of the vehicle on the street currently being traveled, the previous cross street, the next cross street, and other vehicle information. When traveling on a freeway, the graphical display mode displays the current location of the vehicle on the freeway being traveled, the previous cross street and the next cross street. In the textual display mode the vehicle location display provides the current vehicle location by street or freeway name, city, county, state, latitude and longitude coordinates. In addition, the current compass heading, the previous cross street and the next cross street are provided. Icons displayed in the textual display mode enable a user to rapidly access emergency information and general information.

    • A navigation system permits the user to designate certain roads or areas to avoid when planning a route. The navigation system generally includes a database of road segments and a cost associated with the road segments, such as estimated time of travel across that road segment and estimated length of travel across that road segment. The navigation system determines a route from a selected beginning point to a desired destination by evaluating the cost of the road segments to be traveled in several potential routes and recommends the potential route having the lowest total cost. The user can selectively modify the cost of selected road segments to indicate a preference or avoidance of such roads. By increasing the cost of a road segment, the navigation system is less likely to recommend a potential route which includes that road segment. Similarly, by decreasing the cost of a selected road segment, the navigation system is more likely to recommend a potential route which includes that road segment.
