    • A system and method for facilitating the design and development of automatic response unit (ARU) services and for processing automated response unit (ARU) services. The present invention comprises a compiler and interpreter that facilitate the development of an ARU service encoding. The interpreter is one embodiment of the present invention that may be used for processing an ARU service encoding. The present invention further comprises a graphical user interface (GUI) tool for creating and maintaining an ARU service encoding. An ARU service encoding is a tree structure comprised of service nodes wherein each service node may represent a caller's menu selection from the ARU service. Each service node has multiple components including variable support, message capability, processing capability, and default capability. The present invention parses the ARU service encoding for service nodes. For each service node, the present invention processes node variables, prefunction messages, automated input, prefunction interactions, functions, postfunction interactions, and postfunction messages.

    • A system and method for receiving data and commands from a telephone are described. The system receives a signal (such as a DTMF signal) from a telephone. The system identifies a symbol (i.e., a key) associated with the signal, and determines a duration of the signal. Then, the system stores the symbol and duration in a queue. The received signals are preferably processed by service processors. The service processors translate the received signals according to their respective symbols and durations with reference to a translation table. These service processors provide interactive telecommunication services to telephone users. Also described is a calculator service processor that provides a calculator service to telephone users. The calculator service processor translates some of the signals as operands, and others of the signals as operators. The calculator service processor preferably translates these received signals according to their respective symbols and durations. The calculator service processor applies the operands to the operators to thereby perform mathematical operations.

    • Disclosed is a system that prevalidates service orders that are placed by an inter exchange carrier with a local exchange carrier for connection of the inter exchange carrier with a business customer. An integrated prevalidation system and service order system is disclosed in which prevalidation requests are performed using the data that is entered for the service order. Prevalidation responses are then used to ensure that the order will be correct when submitted, thereby avoiding, the necessity for expensive supplemental orders. Further, the present invention allows for stand alone prevalidation requests which enable a provisioner to determine availability of circuits, and to determine location information and equipment identification directly from the LEC databases. Further, the present invention is capable of reconciling the database of the inter exchange carrier with the database of the LEC to avoid submission of incorrect service orders. Further, auditing reports can be generated whenever a prevalidation response has been accepted and a service order acknowledgment has rejected the service order. These reports can be used to audit and obtain credit for the necessary supplemental orders which may follow. Also, prevalidation requests are reserved to prevent submission of conflicting service orders.

    • A method and system for detecting optical signal degradation or loss within the optical domain of a fiber network. Optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) are provided at network nodes. Optical data traffic is conducted between nodes via a fiber link. The fiber link extends between respective ports of the optical cross-connect switches at each network node. Dedicated signals for detecting faults are introduced and removed within the optical domain of the fiber communication network. In one embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled directly to the fiber link for broadcasting optical signals for fault detection. In another embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled to the fiber link through one or more dedicated ports within optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) at network nodes. Optical signals for fault detection are then broadcast or switched through working and/or spare fibers. Distinctive optical fault detection signals are used when the signals are broadcast or switched over working fibers. Optical signal impairment or loss for a particular link or span is detected simply and quickly in the network optical domain. Rapid, accurate optical fault capability can be added to communication networks without requiring changes to existing light terminal elements and processing circuitry in the electrical domain.
