    • A ventilated carding cylinder for allowing heat generated in the carding cylinder during operation to be dissipated. The carding cylinder includes an internal, longitudinally extending, air flow passage and impeller means provided therein for moving air through the air flow passage during operation of the carding cylinder. This movement of air aids in dissipating heat generated by the carding cylinder during the fiber carding process. Reduction of heat in the carding cylinder can minimize the risk of fire occurring in the fibers and also thermal growth of the cylinder during operation.

    • Metallic clothing having metallic wire teeth bent at a double angle. The lower portion of each tooth is angled by an first angle with respect to vertical, and the upper portion is angled at a second angle with respect to vertical. The upper portion terminates at the tip, or point, of the tooth. This double-angle tooth profile is angled in the direction opposite to the general direction of travel of fibers being carded. The upper side portion of each tooth is tapered inwardly to the tip, and the rear edge of the upper end of each tooth may be provided with a forward curvature towards the point of the tooth. Alternate embodiments include single angled teeth and a double-angled teeth, each having a base portion substantially the same height as the teeth.

    • Method and apparatus for the intermittent cleaning of carding flats by the use of pressurized air. A carriage having a plurality of nozzles is oscillated intermittently back and forth on a track adjacent to flats revolving about a carding cylinder of a carding machine. Pressurized air delivered from the nozzles on the flats blow trash and debris from the clothing of the flats downwardly into a vacuum plenum for disposal. A proximity sensor is provided for sensing a flat to initiate the cleaning cycle, wherein the carriage and nozzles are activated for cleaning a particular carding flat. After the cleaning cycle, delivery of pressurized air to the nozzles is ceased and is again activated upon the next predetermined cleaning of a carding flat.

Reaction force sensors (C) is mechanically coupled between rotational drive (B) and carding machine frame (12). Sensor means (C) senses the reaction forces on the rotational drive caused by the torque of feed roll (10) during feeding of fibrous mass (F) through nip (26). Sensor (C) includes a displaceable torque arm (50) and a sensor member (56). Sensor (56) senses the displacements of torque arm (50) which is affixed to rotational drive (B).

    • A web weight control system and method are disclosed wherein the actual weight of fibers supplied to a carding machine (36) are measured in a weight pan (20) or while moving on a conveyor (22) by a sensor (92). the supply roll (14) is controlled by computer (A) to supply a preset weight of fibers. The weighed fibers are supplied on an apron feed (22) to a pneumatic delivery system (28). The delivery of weighed fibers by apron feeder (22) may be adjusted by adjusting the speed of an apron feed roll (50a). This maintains a prescribed quantity or level of fiber in a fiber storage chute feed (32). Pressure sensed by a pressure gauge (52) is used to indicate quantity of fiber in chute feed (32) and pressure signal (53) is fed to computer (A) for control of delivery roll (50a). Card feed roll (62) which feeds fibers in the form of a batt (35) from chute feed (32) to the carding machine is controlled by computer (A) in synchronization with the speed of the carding machine as sensed by doffer roll (68). A preset web weight signal (48) is compared to an actual weight signal (46) representing the actual weight of fibers supplied. Any difference between is compensated for by adjustment of the operation of card feed roll (62), and adjustment of fiber supply roll (14).

    • A carding apparatus is illustrated wherein trash removal means is provided utilizing a carding flat means together with a first plate carried for vertical adjustment relative to the flat means for varying the setting between the plate and a clothed carding cylinder. A second plate has means for setting a surface thereof in close proximity to the surface of the clothed cylinder. A relatively wide setting is provided for the first plate and a slot is formed by the first and second plates which will be self-expelling of trash, short fibers and the like by reason of such wide setting of the first plate followed by the close setting of the second plate acting as an air barrier upon the opened fibers carded by the carding flat means. A suction plenum provides a system of removing a large part of the already expelled trash so as to greatly improve the carding operation while minimizing loss of desirable longer fibers.

    • An assembly is illustrated for use in connection with the main cylinder and the like of a carding machine wherein an annular shroud has a segmental portion of reduced thickness for providing a ledge type bearing surface for support and securement directly to the card frame, the shroud also having a bearing receiving recess so that the cylinder mounting shaft may be supported within the shroud. The bearing has a pair of parallel inserts, spaced on each side of the shaft, having thickened inner portions for engaging the inner race of the bearing for removing the bearing while the cylinder is carried within the card frame. The shroud provides an arcuate mounting surface for positioning stationary card flats facilitating the provision of means for resiliently carrying the flats yieldably urging them downwardly while permitting adjustment of the settings.
