[Also in Division H2] The motive power for a vehicle which moves over a prepared track so that it is supported by cushions of air, is derived from a linear induction motor 1 which is normally set for forward movement by means of pole-changing unit 2, the main supply 3 being derived from a generator on the vehicle or from an external source. For braking the pole-number of the motor 1 is set for a lower synchronous speed so that the main motor regenerates to energize an auxiliary linear motor 4 which produces a reverse torque. The auxiliary motor is associated with a further pole-changing unit 5. The motor 4 may also be energized from the supply 3 to augment the braking thrust. The vehicle may be decelerated in a number of stages by setting successively lower synchronous speeds for the main motor, final stoppage being effected by mechanical braking. An exciter 7 maintains the field of the motor 1 in the event of power supply failure. The unit 2 is controlled by a velocity detector 6. Pads 10 are fed with pressurized air from compressors 11, 12, driven by engines 13, 14, the pressure of air from the pads reacting on track 15 which carries armature rail 16. Stabilizing pads 17 are provided. The motors 1, 4 may be combined in a single motor. Specification 995,127 is referred to.
