    • The process includes applying a localized static, magnetic or electric field to neurological or neuromuscular tissue to aid in the intracellular uptake and energy absorption of electric or magnetic dipoles present in the tissue and the cells. Before the applying step dipoles can be introduced in the tissues or cells. Also, after or during the applying step, an alternating, oscillating or pulsed electromagnetic field can be applied to the tissue to enhance the intracellular uptake of energy, and the energy absorption responsiveness in the tissue and/or the energy absorption of the dipoles in the tissue. The process can utilize a constant magnetic field through the interaction with the intracellular dipoles in the tissue. Further, an external electromagnetic field can be applied to the tissue to excite the particles and raise the energy level of the tissue to destroy the cells and modify their behavior to decrease the degenerative process. Additionally, particles can be introduced into the extracellular environment of the tissue to alter membrane events and potentiate energy delivery to the diseased inflammatory or reactive cells or reduce energy delivery to the normal cells.

    • An improvement in NMR imaging techniques is disclosed, whereby the image is "shadowed" to intensify and contrast the image generated by the NMR sensitive nuclei, as a consequence of the introduction to the examined locus, e.g., human tissue of ferromagnetic, diamagnetic or paramagnetic particles. The intensified and clarified image is itself diagnostically valuable, in accordance with art recognized methods but also provides an improved information base for establishing and controlling treatment modes, especially in determining spatial density and distribution of particles by comparing standard and enhanced images. According to a preferred embodiment, metabolizable particles are employed, whereby the change and rate of change with metabolic time can be imaged, compared, and correlated with various metabolic diseases or malignant states.

    • A process for the treatment of cancer by the application of external electromagnetic energy capable of achieving biophysical alterations in the intracellular structure of cancer cells in living tissue, including stimulation of intracellular production of interferon. The process accomplishes these biophysical alterations by tuning an external electromagnetic energy to the resonant energy absorption frequencies of the intracellular structure of the selected cells and then exposing the subject to this tuned electromagnetic energy field. Alternatively, the field can be tuned to the frequency which has been calculated to be closest to the resonant frequency of the cancer cells and furthest from the resonant frequency of the normal cells. The process may be further enhanced by the intracellular absorption of selected materials designed to alter the magnetic susceptibility and therefore the resonant energy absorption frequency of the intracellular structure.

    • A treatment of atherosclerosis by the application of external electromagnetic energy capable of the generation of heat and biophysical alterations in intracellular particles and particles within atherosclerotic plaques to induce resolution of the atherosclerotic plaques. This process allows for the selective treatment of the atherosclerotic plaque without damaging the normal blood vessel by the compartmentalized alteration of biophysical properties within the atherosclerotic lesion.The process comprises introducing minute particles into the interior of atherosclerotic plaques and the cells involved in the lesion. These particles being injected intravenously while suspended in an appropriate solution are of a size generally having a diameter of approximately 1 micron or less and one of a material with properties such as ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or diamagnetic so as to be inductively heated when subjected to a high frequency alternating electromagnetic field. Introducing the particles as described the patient is thereafter subjected to an alternating electromagnetic field to inductively heat the particles sufficiently to raise the temperature of the atherosclerotic lesion and destroy the atherosclerotic lesion without harming the normal artery or intima.

    • A process for treating diseased cells in the living tissue of a subject. A solution of ferric oxyhydroxide or other intracellular chemically-generated, energy particles is intravenously injected into the subject. After the particles have been intracellularly absorbed by the diseased cells, the oxygen level in the subject's blood is raised, as by subjecting him to hyperbaric air or oxygen. This increases the rate of the intracellular absorption of oxygen by the diseased cells. This oxygen absorption then together with the intracellularly-absorbed particles increase the rate of oxidation and metabolism of the particles, and thereby raise the subject's intracellular energy. The intracellular production of interleukins and other activators, such as interferons and prostaglandins, is thereby stimulated, and these interleukins and other activators destroy the diseased cells wherever they may be in the subject. This process can be enhanced by then applying an alternating electromagnetic field tuned to a resonant frequency to the subject.
