    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for moving relative to one another an article or workpiece and a tool which performs a cyclic operation on the workpiece so that the cyclic operation can be repeatedly carried out at different points on the workpiece. The apparatus and the method which comprehends the operation of the apparatus are particularly addressed to a numerically controlled sewing machine in which an article to be sewn and a reciprocating sewing needle are translated relative to one another according to a plurality of vector commands which individually define the direction and length of each sewing stitch and together define a desired path or seam along which the sewing stitches are formed. The article is supported on a translatable carriage and the movements of the carriage relative to the sewing needle are controlled by a pre-programmed memory tape. The memory tape is programmed with coded digital information defining the vector commands and other machine function commands and has the information defining the vector command for each stitch contained entirely within a single tape frame. The movements of the article and translatable carriage are executed in response to and in synchronism with the cyclic operation of the sewing needle and may occur during the phase of the cyclic operation in which the needle is withdrawn from the article being sewn.

    • A system for exposing artworks on a photosensitive surface includes a photoexposure device having a cathode ray tube energized to exhibit luminous symbols, one at a time, on its face. An associated optical system projects a real image of the luminous exhibited symbol onto a sheet of photosensitive material. Symbol generating signals supplied to the cathode ray tube are derived from a store wherein they are defined in relation to a single fixed or standard angular orientation relative to the face of the cathode ray tube. As electronic resolver modifies the symbol defining signals supplied from the symbol store to produce ''''rotated'''' symbol generating signals which are supplied to the cathode ray tube and which cause the illumination on the face of the cathode ray tube of corresponding luminous symbols at selected angular orientations corresponding to angular orientation commands supplied to the electronic resolver. The symbol store may be a memory unit associated with a computer and in which memory unit the symbol defining signals are stores as sets of digital instructions, or it may consist of a set or font of predrawn graphic symbols and an associated camera tube or similar sensor for raster scanning individually selected ones of such predrawn symbols. By a two-dimensionally movable carriage supporting the cathode ray tube, the tube is movable relative to the photosensitive surface to allow the symbols illuminated on its face to be exposed at any desired location on the photosensitive surface. To expose a line on the photosensitive surface the cathode ray tube is energized to repetitively illuminate straight line strokes on its face while the image location of such strokes is moved along the desired line to be exposed. As part of the line exposing process, a signal corresponding to the instantaneous slope or tangent of the line being exposed is derived and supplied to the resolver to cause each stroke illuminated on the face of the cathode ray tube to be so angularly oriented that its image on the photosensitive surface is perpendicular to the line being exposed.

    • An apparatus for handling generally identical articles stored in a matrix of individual open-ended compartments includes a transfer receptacle movable to position it adjacent to any selected compartment. A first ejecting means comprising a pneumatic tube and nozzle directs a current of pressurized air or other gas from in front of the open end of the selected compartment toward the interface between the article in the compartment and the wall thereof. Through the influence of this gas, the article is rapidly shifted from the compartment to the adjacent transfer receptacle. One or more of the compartments may be a sending station to which articles are delivered by the transfer receptacle for transport to remote points, and another one or more of the compartments may be a receiving station to which articles are returned from the remote point. The remainder of the compartments are storage stations. An article carried by the transfer receptacle is returned to the matrix by a second ejecting means including a member movable relative to the transfer receptacle for pushing the article from the receptacle into the compartment adjacent to which the receptacle is positioned.
