    • This abstract describes a system for the field recording of seismic data in which a large plurality of geophones are divided into groups and each group is connected to an array terminal. All of the array terminals are connected in series, by cables, with the last terminal connected to a recording unit. In each of the terminals there are means to process the geophone analog signals by amplifying and adding them to a selected shifting function, and axis-crossing-coding (AXC) the resulting sum signals to provide a plurality of pulses which are stored in a parallel-toserial converter. In addition, each of the terminals contains a buffer register. On command from the recording unit the bits stored in the converters are read out in series and are transmitted by a pair of signal conductors to the next in series terminal for storage in the buffer register, and from there to the buffer register in the next in series terminal, and so on, until all of the bits stored in each of the terminals are transmitted as a continuing train of single bit signals to the recording unit, where they are recorded on a magnetic disc. Each of the array terminals has a hard wired address code which is transmitted as a heading to the data stored in that converter. Logic circuit means are provided to identify, for each terminal, which of the plurality of cable ports in the terminal are occupied by cables, and which of the cable ports is the one by means of which the commands are received from the recording unit.

    • This abstract describes a system for acquisition of analog signals at a plurality of sensors, carrying these signals in goups of M channels to each of N spaced-apart array terminals, processing each signal in the array terminals by separately amplifying, adding to a shifting function of selected amplitude, axis-crossing-coding these sum signals and storing as single bit pulses, one for each channel, in a parallel-to-serial converter. Each of the converters in each of the array terminals are operatively connected in series and to an array controller, which also controls a disc magnetic recorder to run at constant speed. The disc generates a disc clock, and responsive to the disc clock the converters are read out in series as a sequential train of MN bits and stored on the disc. Successive samples at subsequent digitizing intervals are stored on the disc, to form a first record. Subsequent records are processed, coded and recorded, and composited with previous records on the disc. After a plurality of records have been composited the stacked series is read off the disc in demultiplexed form, and stored in a computer memory. The resulting traces are than processed by a computer and FFT box.

    • A simplified cable system for use in gathering S analog signals into each of T array terminals (AT), spaced apart a distance D, where the analog signals are amplified, digitized, stored and, on command, transmitted as trains of digital bits along a digital conductor pair in the cable system, to successive ATs downline, to a recording unit. In the optimum embodiment, the cables are all identical, are plugged into each of 2 ports, or receptacles, in each AT. The cables are D/2 long, have S/2 conductor pairs, and S/2 takeouts spaced D/S apart, each takeout connected to a different conductor pair. Each cable contains at least one digital conductor pair. Two cables in series connect between adjacent ATs. The plugs joining one cable to the next, connect only the digital conductor through from cable to cable, while the analog conductor pairs are dead ended at the joining plugs.

    • A data acquisition and transport system including a plurality of array terminals, each array terminal having a plurality of geophones delivering analog signals thereto, the analog signals being digitized to 1-bit and temporarily stored, and on demand, transmitted downline to a recording station, as a train of 1-bit pulses. The array terminals have two identical ports into which cable segments of two conductor digital transmission channels can be plugged. Means are provided in the recording station to place a DC potential between the two terminals of the digital transmission channel. In the array terminals means are provided for identifying which of the two identical ports is the one which receives the DC potential, which is identified as the downline port. On receiving a DC potential at the downline port, a corresponding DC potential is transmitted through the upline port to the next array terminal and so on. Means are provided for amplifying, digitizing to 1 bit, storing, and transmitting to the recording station the plurality of analog signals received from the geophones connected to an array terminal. Means are also provided for receiving trains of digital pulses from each of the upline array terminals at the upline port, storing them in shift registers, and then transmitting from the shift registers through the downline port, to the next downline array terminal.
