    • A portable tote container is provided with an open box configuration. Divider panels and a work surface are disposed within the container. The divider panels allow for parts to be organized within the tote container. The work surface has an outer layer of anti-static material and is configured to couple with the divider panels. The work surface has an inner layer of alternative, less expensive material, which has a cavity formed inside. The cavity houses complete or partially complete components and creates an additional storage space within the container. The work surface is also movable in that it slides over the divider panel to cover the divider panels and to create additional work surface area.

    • A dual modem automatically switches between a wireless and wire-based communication modes using mode selection circuitry that detects when a wire-based communications network, such as a standard land-line telephone network, is coupled to the modem. When the modem selection circuitry detects the presence of the wire-based communications network, it couples modem processing circuitry to a wire-based interface. When the modem selection circuitry fails to detect the presence of the wire-based communications network, it couples the modem processing circuitry to a wireless interface and the wireless interface is also powered for coupling to a wireless communications network, such as a cellular phone network. The wireless interface is not powered when the modem is coupled to the wire-based communications network.

    • A data transfer system that relieves the central processing unit of a personal computer of the burden of controlling data transfers between mass storage devices coupled to a single device controller without utilizing main memory and which also increases the speed of such transfers. The data transfer system works with a computer having a DMA chip by causing the data to be stored in a transfer buffer instead of main memory when the device controller transfers data between the mass storage devices. The data transfer system also enables a data mirroring system for a personal computer by writing the data to the transfer buffer and also to a third mass storage device acting as a backup device. Another aspect of the data transfer system operates in computers having a local bus that couples peripherals to a central processing unit/main memory subsystem through a system controller. Data transfer logic executes in the system controller to decouple the central processing unit/main memory subsystem from the local bus while the data is transferred between the first and second mass storage devices under the control of the device controller.

    • An external modem providing for the increased throughput of a serial device of a computer by de-multiplexing data over a pair of physical serial channels of the computer in a predetermined manner is disclosed. A communications port allows for communicatively coupling the computer to an external communications system, such as ISDN. A driver de-multiplexes data received from the logical serial device for transmission over the pair of physical serial channels. A controller then receives the data from the pair of serial channels for transmission over an existing communications system. Communication throughput from the computer to the existing communications system therefore exceeds the maximum throughput of a particular serial channel. The controller also is capable of receiving data from the external communications system for transmission over the pair of serial channels, the driver also capable of multiplexing the data received from the pair of serial channels for transmission over the logical serial device.

    • A portable computer is provided with retractable ear phones. The ear phones can include ear buds with an outer cushion. The ear buds are retractably coupled with the portable computer by an audio cable. A retraction mechanism retracts the audio cable and ear buds into the computer. The portable computer has a cut out sized to receive the ear buds therein, which creates a place to store the ear buds during periods of non-use. To use the ear buds, a user removes the buds from the storage position, and pulls the audio cable from the computer. Pulling the audio cable activates the ear buds and disables an audio output device on the portable computer. To return the ear buds to a storage position, a retraction actuator is depressed which retracts the audio cable into the portable computer. Alternatively, the ear buds can be replaced or used in addition to an audio input device. The ear buds and/or audio input device can be provided on other devices, such as a portable keyboard.

    • A heat sink conduit, for use in cooling electronic devices, made of an elongate strip of thermally conductive material that is repeatedly folded onto itself in an accordion, sinusoidal or serpentine like manner. The elongate strip is compressed between a heat producing component and a heat sink. This compression causes each of the two end segments of the elongate strip to be in positive contact with either the heat producing component or the heat sink. This positive contact allows the heat to be conducted away from the heat producing component to the heat sink and the large surface area of the conduit provides for the transfer of heat through convection and radiation, thereby cooling the heat producing component and the electronic device.
