    • An improved apparatus for shredding, crushing and grinding solid waste materials to the desired particle sizes and shape for waste disposal or other uses is provided in which two unitary i.e. one-piece shredding members having a composite cutting teeth and tooth spacing arrangement in intermeshing shredding relationship mounted on substantially parallel shafts and are positioned in a transverse arrangement to the direction of waste material flow as it is introduced into the crushing apparatus. A shredding element of each shredding member interacts with an element of the other member whereby the shredding elements cooperatively interact on an inlet side of the apparatus. On an outlet or discharge side of the interacting members is positioned relative to a sizing means or screen useful for the passage of solid waste material particles of predetermined size and configuration, while simultaneously rejecting the passage of other improperly sized and shaped particles, for reprocessing through the apparatus.

    • An integrated unitary comminuting system adapted for wastewater channel use is provided with devices which include a stationary single or dual semi-cylindrical-like sizing and sweeping screen member each having a rotating sweeping mechanism of interactive slotted comb bars or blades with tynes or teeth, so as to sweep and clear lodged or agglomerated solids adhering to the outer circumference surface of the semi-cylindrical-like screen member, disposed in spaced apart contiguous parallel relationship with a twin shaft shredder device having two parallel shafts with shredder or grinder teeth along the length thereof that rotate in opposite senses. The unitary system of devices may be positioned perpendicular between the influent and effluent side of the wastewater flow in a channel so that solids therein will encounter the semi-cylindrical-like sizing and sweeping screen members or the twin shaft shredder as the wastewater flows through the channel. Both the single or dual stationary semi-cylindrical-like screen devices cause solids which do not flow directly therethrough to be forcefully swept and diverted from the outer surfaces of the stationary sizing screen members by the rotating sweeping interactive blades mechanism of the system into surrounding the wastewater flow so as to cause and divert or direct the solids to flow into the twin shaft shredder device, aided by circulating wastewater currents generated in the wastewater flow near the entrance to the twin shaft shredder which is generated in part by the rotating sweeping interactive blades of the screening devices, whereupon the removed solids are efficiently channelled into the twin shaft shredder device along with the other wastewater and solids flow where they are reduced in particle size.

    • An improved method for producing one-piece cutter body members for comminuting apparatus for shredding, crushing and grinding bulk solid waste materials is provided. The process creates one-piece cutter body members having cutter teeth distributed along the length of the body members for rotation when in fixed engagement with twin or multiple parallel shafts of the bulk solid waste material comminuting apparatus. The resulting one-piece cutter body members are adaptable to intermeshing comminuting action each having cutting teeth which may be shaped for cutting in both of two opposite directions of rotation.

    • An improved comminutor is provided having a one piece stationary hemispherical cage member and a one piece spherical-like rotatable cutting and shredding member adapted for use with the hemispherical cage in comminuting action with the inline flow of sewage. The hemispherical cage structure is formed by a plurality of spaced apart arcuate elements disposed about an axis of said hemispherical cage and are interconnected at their diametrical ends by a circular comb-like section configuration thereof having a plurality of radially inward projecting teeth. Each arcuate element has one of said teeth disposed at the terminal ends thereof, in alignment therewith and forming an integral part thereof. The rotatable structure of the device in its preferred embodiment incudes at least two substantially diametrically opposed C-shaped or curved arms of predetermined width and may be disposed co-axially with said cage and in the path of sewage flow while having a plurality of cutting and shredding teeth formed thereon and in spaced-apart relationship with the hemispherical cage for interengaging comminuting action with the radially extending teeth portions of the stationary comb-like section and for sweeping through the slots formed in the cage. The teeth of the cutting and shredding arms of the rotatable arcuate-like members are in rotational interengagement relationship with the periphically disposed comb-like section of the cage for comminuting sewage at least once during each revolution of the cutting and shredding arms.

    • An improved comminutor for channels or inline conduits that carry the flow of liquid sewage which includes a semi-cylindrical concave cage formed of a plurality of axially spaced apart sections of arcuate rings or bars connected together arcuately and axially. A plurality of comb-like members are mounted at spaced intervals along the inner surface contour of the semi-cylindrical concave cage member with the teeth of its comb-like members in axial alignment with corresponding sections of the rings or bars which form the cage member. A plurality of rotatable cutting and shredding arms are mounted axially along a helical spiral like path in spaced relationship with the cage member with a plurality of comb-like members for interengaging comminuting action with radially extending portions of their respective teeth. The teeth of the cutting and shredding arms may be in engagement with each tooth of the comb-like members and each of the slotted openings of the cage member at least once during each revolution of the cutting and shredding arms.In another embodiment of the invention the comminutor includes a hemispherical concave cage formed in a similar manner as recited above with respect to the semi-cylindrical cage. In this embodiment the rotatable cutting and shredding arms extend radially outward and have a plurality of teeth at the periphery thereof which travel along paths that conform to the inner concave surface of the hemispherical cage so as to interengage in comminuting action with the cage and the comb-like cutter teeth in a similar manner as in the semi-cylindrical cage embodiment.
