    • A mouse computer input peripheral device includes a window area integrally constructed within the mouse and positioned at an area on the mouse upon which a user normally places a finger in operating the mouse. The mouse further includes an illuminating device and a light sensitive detection device for providing a user signature signal representative of the characteristics of the ridge and valley pattern of the fingerprint of a finger placed upon the window area. The signature signal is transmitted to the BIOS within the computer system in which the mouse is operating and compared with one or more stored patterns which have previously been authorized for access to the computer system. When the user's signature signal is compared with and matches one of the stored and approved signature signals, the system is enabled and the user is granted access.

    • A multiple processor type computing system and an associated method of manufacturing the same from first and second computer systems, each of which include a PCI bus and both a processor and LAN device coupled to the PCI bus, which are selected such that the processors of the computer systems are configured to execute software utilizing different operating systems. Each LAN device is installed on the PCI bus using a PCI interface and is comprised of a data register, a data FIFO and a LAN controller coupled together using internal circuitry. Also coupled to the internal circuitry is a serial I/O port used to connect the LAN device to a network. From these, a multiple processor computing system is manufactured by removing the serial I/O port from each of the LAN devices to expose the internal circuitry thereof. The internal circuitry of the LAN devices are then interconnected to couple the first and second processors in a single multiple processor computing system which is supportably mounted in a common computer chassis. The data register and data FIFO of the first LAN device holds selected address, data and control signals during transfers from the first processor to the second processor arranged by the LAN controller of the first LAN device while the data register and data FIFO of the second LAN device holds selected address, data and control signals during transfers from the second processor to the first processor arranged by the LAN controller of the second LAN device.

    • The present invention provides a rack mount mechanism that includes first and second recessed slides fixed in a stationary position and first and second mounting brackets slideably mounted on the first and second recessed slides, respectively. The first and second mounting brackets each have front and back ends extending, for example, perpendicularly inward from the base of the mounting brackets. A frame is included which is attachable to the computer enclosure and has front and back rails. Each rail has an edge extending, for example, perpendicularly outward from the base of the rail and each edge has a plurality of apertures. An angled bar-nut is coupled to each of the rails by threading the angled portion of each angled bar-nut through an aperture in the edge of the rail and including a screw and a cage nut to secure the angled portion of each angled bar-nut to the edge of each rail. The front and back ends of the first and second mounting brackets are positioned between and coupled to each angled bar-nut and the edge of the front and back rails, respectively.

    • A configuration system including a processor having memory for storing operating parameters and configuration logic for retrieving the operating parameters and configuring a computer system to achieve a desired performance level. The configuration logic preferably includes programmable regulators, such as a voltage regulator and a clock synthesizer, for asserting an operating voltage and clock signal, respectively, to the processor. These operating signals are asserted at nominal levels at start up to allow the processor to operate at a reduced, yet adequate performance level. The stored operating parameters are asserted onto a processor data bus by the processor during start up and stored in corresponding data latches. The parameters are further provided to the programmable regulators, such as a voltage regulator, a clock synthesizer, for example, which convert the operating signals from the nominal levels to optimal levels corresponding to the retrieved parameters. The operating signals may further be dynamically reconfigured by storing new parameters in the data latches, if desired. Thus, the regulators may be dynamically reconfigured during operation to achieve operating criterion, such as slowing down the clock frequency during a low power mode.

    • Method and apparatus for quickly and easily securing a computer device, such as a floppy disk drive, to a device carrier. In a preferred embodiment, the carrier contains a plurality of dowels that align with pre-existing screw holes on the device. When the device is placed into the carrier, a first dowel attached to a bottom panel of the carrier is inserted into a first screw hole of the device. The device is thereby partially secured to the carrier. The device is further secured to the carrier when both the device and the carrier together are inserted into a computer bay. As the carrier enters the computer bay, a second dowel flexibly attached to a side panel of the carrier is inserted into a second screw hole of the device. Therefore, whenever the device and carrier are in the computer bay, the device is completely secured to the carrier.
