    • An electromagnetically operated DC power contactor for high voltage and current use constructed to afford the required contact pressure at the arcing and main contacts with minimal magnet force together with the provision of contact wipe and shearing and rolling action to effect breaking of welds that might occur during contact closure due to bounce at the arcing contacts. A trifurcated movable contact structure is incorporated in this contactor to reduce the current in each of the individual contact segments to approximately 1/3 of the full load current thereby reducing the effective blow-apart force developed at the contacts during fault conditions. Each of the three movable contact segments has both an arcing and main contact at right angles to one another and with similar current carrying capacity, and the three segments together effectively provide a total of three pairs or six current paths to the stationary contact when the contactor is closed to reduce the force required to maintain the contacts in the closed position during a fault condition. The mechanical linkage used to provide the necessary contact motion is constructed to provide maximum mechanical advantage for the device. For this purpose, the position of the pivot of the movable contact assembly is such that maximum contact force develops a force in a downward direction past the armature pivot. This effectively minimizes the torque requirement of the magnet structure since the operating lever arm of the armature and movable contact is reduced considerably as compared to that of the lever arm of a conventional structure.

    • An electric snap-action switch is disclosed having a movable contactor with oppositely inclined camming surfaces meeting at an apex on the top thereof. The contactor is centrally biased upwardly from below and cammed downwardly from above by a laterally movable operator traversing the inclined camming surfaces such that the contactor snaps laterally against vertical stationary contacts as the apex is crossed by the operator. The invention includes fulcrum means effective to stop the downward movement of the contactor before the operator crosses the apex whereby a moment arm is formed from a fulcrum to the point of operator-contactor engagement such that further movement of the operator towards the apex effectuates a torque on the contactor to pivot the contactor about the fulcrum to positively break any welds or other frictional attachments between the contacts without relying on the stored energy of the carrier biasing means, thereby affording a switch having little possibility of failure in an "on" position. The inclined camming surfaces of the contactor may be formed with compound slopes to assure constant operator pressure prior to trip point as the contactor pivots and increases the angle of inclination of the camming surface traversed by the operator. Specific embodiments of a double-pole single-throw trigger switch and a double-pole double-throw toggle lever switch are disclosed.

    • A fast response digital ratemeter is disclosed which calculates the reciprocal of every period between consecutive event pulses. A period counter is continuously incremented by clock pulses of a known frequency and measures the interval between event pulses by accumulating the clock pulses. Each event pulse both marks the end of the previous period and the beginning of the new period by latching the accumulated incremented counts of the period counter into a memory and resetting the period counter to immediately begin re-accumulating clock pulses occurring in the new period. The memory applies the accumulated counts as a divisor to divider means which divides the divisor into a known constant by repetitively subtracting the divisor from the constant. Since the divisor is retained by the memory, incrementation to the value of the divisor is necessary only once (during measurement of the period by the period counter), not before each subtraction, thus minimizing calculation time. Display counter means count the number of subtractions performed and display this as the rate of recurrence of input events in units determined by the constant. Decimal point shifting (including underflow and overflow detection), period averaging, overrun detection, and synchronization of event and clock pulses are also disclosed.
