    • Automatic combing and separation of the leads of radial lead electronic devices is provided by at least one flexible, insulating blade mounted on a contactor assembly whose contacts are lowered onto and then drawn along the leads. The blade is positioned to interpose itself between adjacent leads. A center contact has a window that mounts locating pin. The blade extends through the window and is preferably urged resiliently into contact with the pin to provide an accurate and reliable alignment between the blade tip and an opening between a center lead and an adjacent lead.

    • A device for arresting a falling electronic component at a preselected retention site has a pendulum that acts in cooperation with a stop, a guide rail and a stirrup to bring the component to a bounce-free landing on a foot of the stirrup. The falling component strikes an upwardly facing surface of the pendulum causing it to rotate rapidly away from the component. The stop intercepts the backswing of the pendulum and returns it to clamp the component against the guide rail. A side edge of the pendulum provides a jamming action that restrains the component against bouncing up from the foot.

    • A tester/sorter for performing electrical tests on axial lead devices such as diodes at a very high throughput rate carries the devices on the periphery of a rotating wheel. A contactor assembly periodically makes electrical connection with one or more of the axial lead devices. A flying arm assembly mounts the contactor assembly so that it travels through a closed loop path of motion with respect to the wheel. In a first path portion, mechanical controls acting on the flying arm assembly lower the contactor assembly into electrical contact with the leads of the device. Once in electrical connection, there is no relative motion between the contactor assembly and the leads. After the test is completed, the mechanical controls lift the contactor assembly away from the leads and return it to its starting position. This travel is substantially free of mechanical impacts that could produce vibrations and thereby degrade the accuracy of the testing.

    • An automatic handling and testing machine for radial lead electronic devices such as transistors has a probe assembly that includes drive components powered by a rotating drive shaft that develop a cycled, closed loop movement of a platform and one or more contactor assemblies mounted on the platform. A base member supports a set of rotary cams detachably connected to the drive shaft, a four arm linkage that follows the cams, and the platform pivotally supported on the linkage. The contactor assemblies are adjustable with respect to the leads in all three directions and are structured for rapid and convenient attachment to the platform. The base member, cams, linkages, and platform form an integral, self-contained unit that is replaceably secured to the machine housing, preferably by a single screw. A linear shuttle carries the devices in horizontal steps through a series of test stations each associated with one of the contactor assemblies. The linear shuttle operates cyclically in coordination with the probe assembly. The shuttle also includes a set of clamps that close and open during the cycle of operation to grip and release the bodies of the devices. In the preferred form, the shuttle is mounted for reciprocal sliding movement in a horizontal direction. The shuttle includes a mechanical assembly that operates the clamps in coordination with the reciprocating motion.

    • A plurality of elongated bridging contacts each extending in a first direction are mounted on a pair of support blocks that are driven in a symmetrical, reciprocating motion between first and second limit positions. In the first position each contact makes electrical connection at one end with a lead of a semiconductor device to be tested and at the other end with a contact pin that is connected directly to a load board. The contacts are preferably pivotable to a limited degree about a point intermediate the contacting ends and flex slightly when in the first position to develop a good contact force. In the second position the contacts are spaced from the leads and the pins. Driving means for the support blocks, as well as the support blocks themselves, are structured to provide a minimum separation along the first direction between the load board and the device (preferably less than 25 millimeters) and an unrestricted mating plane for the load board. In a preferred form, the support blocks mount on a pair of opposed cross heads which in turn mount on a pair of slidable rods. The symmetrical, reciprocating motion is generated by spring means that urges the cross heads together and cam means, acting through a pivoted arm linked to both slide rods, that urge the cross heads apart.
