    • A stereophonic broadcasting system incorporating companding of the difference signal in which both the usual difference signal and a compressed version of the difference signal are transmitted to one or more remote receivers. At the receiver the usual, unchanged, difference signal is used as a reference signal for controlling the expansion of the compressed difference signal so as to cause the amplitude of the companded difference to equal the level of the usual difference signal. Thus, the expander is adaptive to any compression characteristic that might be employed at the transmitter. Further, the availability of the usual uncompressed difference signal at the receiver enables the adaptive decoding of dynamic parameters of the received signal, such as frequency response and attack and recovery times, so that all of the parameters of the original signal can be restored automatically.

    • A memory system for use in a video game system or the like that has a limited number of signal lines for communicating address signals and a data bus, includes random access memory (RAM) to augment that contained in the game console in addition to plural segments of read only memory (ROM). A first decoding circuit is coupled to the data bus and to the signal lines that communicate address signals to the ROM segments, and in response to detection of a predetermined address and a predetermined status of selected data lines produces a signal that selects one of the plurality of ROM segments of memory locations. A second decoding circuit is coupled to a selected group of the address signal lines, and also to a segment of the memory unit set aside for random access memory (RAM) to which the others of the address signal lines are also coupled. When a predetermined address is communicated, the first decoding circuit is inhibited and the second decoding circuit couples an instruction signal to the RAM segment to either write data to or read data from a memory location addressed by the others of the address lines.

    • The economy of manufacture of electric guitars and electric bass guitars is improved, with no loss of quality, by providing an anchor flange in integral relationship with a metal pickguard of the guitar or bass guitar. Extended through the anchor flange are adjustment screws which connect adjustably to bridge barrels over which the strings extend. The adjustment screws and bridge barrels are preassembled to the anchor flange, and all electric components are preassembled to the pickguard, prior to mounting of the pickguard on the body of the guitar or bass. Thus, the ultimate in economy is achieved, yet the anchor flange has very strong support from the pickguard and is located accurately thereby.

    • A flangeless winding core for magnetic tape, adapted for stacking between like winding cores, has an annular body with parallel top and bottom annular surfaces, an outer circumferential surface around which the tape is wound, and an inner circumferential surface from which a plurality of angularly spaced lugs extend radially inward, the inner ends of which are curved to define a discontinuous inner circumferential core surface. The lugs have the shape of a sector of an annulus, are spaced from each other by a like number of similarly shaped gaps, and project equally above the top and bottom surfaces of the annular body a distance greater than one-half the axial dimension of the annular body. The top and bottom surfaces of the lugs are parallel to each other and slope relative to the median plane of the annular body, thereby to maximize the effective axial length of the discontinuous inner circumferential core surfce while permitting stacking of the annular body surfaces against one another, with the lugs mating with the gaps of a nesting core, and enables tape having a width approximately the same as the axial dimension of the outer circumferential surface to support the tape wound about an adjacent core when the cores are stacked.

    • A musical keyboard instrument is disclosed for recording and storing a musical performance and then automatically playing back the performance. As is conventional, a keyboard having a plurality of keys is provided, along with musical tone generators that are associated with the keys. In accordance with the disclosed invention, means are provided for sensing, at a sensing time, those of the keys which are activated. A sequence of frames are generated, each frame including digital information representative of the keys that are activated at a given sensing time. The duration of each frame is a function of the relative locations of the keys activated at a given sensing time, and is therefore a duration which can vary from frame to frame. Each sensing time is determined by the previously completed frame, i.e., when a frame is complete, the statuses of the keys are again sensed so that the next frame can be generated. The sequences of frames are stored on magnetic tape. In a preferred form of the invention, the keys are divided into groups or "ports", and the digital information for each frame includes identification of the ports that have one or more activated keys and identification of the individual keys that are activated within that port. The rationale of this coding scheme is particularly compatible with the physical characteristics and manual dexterity of a human playing a keyboard instrument. The digital information of each frame is encoded in frequency shift keyed form and frequency shift keyed signals are recorded by generating digitally synthesized sinusoidal signals for application to magnetic tape.
