    • An Apparatus for separating and advancing documents includes a moving element for frictionally engaging and advancing one of the documents along a path, and a stationary element for frictionally engaging and halting the advance of the remainder of the documents. The moving element and the stationary element each include a plurality of belts and are disposed in relative juxtaposition whereby the one document is gripped between the moving element and the stationary element and advanced along the path under the influence of the moving element. The moving element and the stationary element contact the first and second surfaces, respectively, of the one document via the respective belts to provide a column strength to the one document over a substantial surface area of the document as the one document advances through the apparatus, thereby preventing portions of the one document from being crimped between the moving element and the stationary element.

    • A folding machine has folding rollers mounted to a frame by means of torsional bearings. The torsional bearings provide a force for biasing movable rollers toward complementary rollers. In some embodiments the torsional bearings are also used as a means for adjusting and measuring the movable-roller biasing force. In these embodiments, torque arms are connected to the torsional bearings to be used for both adjusting and indicating this biasing force. In another embodiment, a lifter arm is provided for separating a movable roller mounted on a torsional bearing from a stationary roller. A special linkage is provided for ensuring that the movable roller, when adjusted, moves in an arc about a central axis of the torsional bearing. A fixed lifter arm bracket is described for use in conjunction with the lifter arm. By inserting a sheet of paper between the lifter bracket and the lifter arm the movable roller is moved in an arc about the central axis the proper fixed distance from the stationary roller.

    • An automatic rewind mechanism for use in rewinding film across the projection axis of a motion picture projector having a supply reel with one end of the film attached thereto, a take-up reel, a forward projection mode, a rewind mode, a projection axis, and a shuttle mechanism for moving the film across the projection axis. The rewind mechanism comprises a motor drive means; a first roller supported for movement from an ineffective position to an effective position for engaging the flanges of the supply reel, the roller in its effective position being rotatable by the motor drive means to winding the film onto the supply reel; a second roller supported for movement from an ineffective position to an effective position for engaging the flanges of the take-up reel, the second roller in its effective position being rotatable by the motor drive means for winding the film onto the take-up reel; a sensing means for sensing an increase in film tension incident to an end of run condition upon completion of forward projection of the film; and a control means responsive to the sensing means for automatically moving the second roller into its ineffective position and for moving the first roller into its effective position thereby rewinding the film from the take-up reel across the projection axis to the supply reel.

    • An article of manufacture provides a plurality of pockets for receiving transparencies. That article comprises two essentially transparent strips interconnected at predetermined intervals to provide the pockets, with one strip being longer than the other strip between successive points of interconnection. An apparatus for cutting pieces of material from a strip comprises a die having cutting portions surrounding a space where the pieces are cut. Viewing equipment enables the strip to be viewed through the die, and a punch is located adjacent the die for cutting the pieces of material from the strip. An apparatus for inserting a transparency into a pocket releasably retains the pocket at a loading station. A spacing device is insertable into the pocket to open the pocket for an insertion of a transparency. A separate device advances the transparency into the open pocket, and the spacing device may be withdrawn while the transparency is being inserted.

    • A vacuum conveyor system is described comprising a conveyor belt, having vacuum holes therein, combined with means for simultaneously creating positive and negative pressures on the underside of the conveyor belt. The positive pressure acts on portions of the underside of the conveyor belt where there are no vacuum holes and the negative pressure acts through the vacuum holes on articles conveyed by the conveyor belt. The positive pressure tends to establish an air bearing which reduces belt drag while the negative pressure tends to hold conveyed articles tightly against an upper surface of the conveyor belt. A more detailed aspect of the disclosure relates to the size relationship between the belt''s vacuum holes and a passageway which connects the vacuum holes to a vacuum chamber.
