    • A rotary switch for a people mover guideway which as a pair of spaced tire paths with a predetermined tire path, guidebeam and electric rail configuration. The rotary switch routes a transit car from one entry guideway path to either two exit guideway paths. The switch inlcudes a switch frame having guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure on opposite sides of the switch frame, each being compatible with the guideway configuration to provide car routing to the respective paths. Each side of the switch frame member includes at least one tire path in alignment with the corresponding guideway tire path for car routing to one of the exit paths. The guidebeam and electric rail structure on each side of the switch frame member are located above the tire path on the corresponding side of the switch frame member and the other tire path for the guideway when the switch frame member is in respective rotational positions. The electric rail structure on each side of the switch frame member includes three elongated power rails and at least two elongated signal rails and structure for supporting the electric rails on each side of the switch frame member, within the space between the associated tire paths, for electrical connection to collectors on the underside of transit cars that pass over the respective sides of the switch.

    • A rotary switch operates in a people mover guideway having a predetermined tire path, guidebeam and electric rail configuration to route a transit car from one entry guideway path to at least either of two exit guideway paths or vice versa. The switch has an elongated structural frame having guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure on one side compatibly with the guideway configuration to provide car routing to one of the two exit paths. The switch frame member is further provided with guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure on another side compatibly with the guideway configuration to provide car routing to the other of the two exit paths. The switch is supported by first and second shafts at its two ends. One of the two shafts is driven to rotate the switch frame between first and second rotational positions corresponding to alignment of the respective switch sides with the guideway. The frame is locked in each position and a backup stop device holds the frame in position if the locking device fails to operate properly. The frame member and its guideway configuration structure are arranged in form and weight rlelative to the frame axis of rotation to provide (1) the described car guidance on the respective switch sides and (2) self-aligning forces urging frame rotational mmovement toward the first and second stop device and (3) car loading forces urging frame rotational movement toward the first or second stop device when a car moves over either switch side.

    • Electrical insulation which has good dielectric strength, good radiation resistance, and good thermal resistance at temperatures of up to 500.degree. C. and, preferably up to 1700.degree. C., includes a substrate which is flexible, has the form of a filament, sheet, wrapper, tape or sleeve, and consists essentially of inorganic materials selected from the group consisting of inorganic fibers and metals, metalloids, or alloys; and at least one layer of at least one oxide of an alkoxide-forming element provided on the substrate to impregnate and/or coat same. The insulation is prepared by a process including applying a solution containing an alkoxy gel polymer, optionally additionally containing at least one inorganic material in finely divided form, to the substrate to provide a treated substrate useful as a preform when allowed to set under ambient conditions. The preform is applied to a part by, for example, wrapping, and is heated to pyrolyze the alkoxy gel polymer to its oxide and provide electrical insulation consisting essentially of inorganic materials. The application and pyrolysis steps may be repeated to build up the thickness of the at least one oxide.

    • A rotary switch for a people mover guideway having a predetermined tire path, guidebeam and electric rail configuration routes a transit car from one entry guideway path to at least either of two exit guideway paths or vice versa. The switch has an elongated structural frame that has guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure compatible with the guideway configuration to provide car routing to one of the two exit paths on one switch side and to provide car routing to the other of the two exit paths on another switch side. Switching is achieved by rotating a movable part of the switch 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis. First and second shafts support the two ends of the switch frame and one of the shafts is driven to rotate the switch frame between first and second rotational positions in which the switch is locked and the switch sides respectively line up with the guideway configuration. The frame is supported in fixed longitudinal relation to one of the shafts and in longitudinally expandable relation to the other of the shafts to allow the frame to expand and contract longitudinally under thermal and/or car loading and thus permit frame deflection to occur about the shafts and frame lock pins with translational load forces applied to the shafts and lock pins essentially in the vertical direction.

    • A tire path, guidebeam, electric rail configuration for a guideway in a people mover system comprises a roadway structure having a pair of spaced tire paths forming a vehicle running surface. A guidebeam is disposed along a centerline between the tire paths to provide generally vertical guidance surfaces above the tire running surface for generally horizontal guidewheels on the vehicles. First and second electric rail units are substantially identically structure and extend along the roadway structure between the tire paths to provide conductive surfaces above the tire running surface for electric collection by brush assemblies on the vehicles. Together, the electric rail units have a predetermined number of electric rails to provide power and signal circuits for the vehicles. The first and second electric rail units are supported on opposite sides of the tire path centerline and at substantially equal distances from the centerline to enable turnaround vehicle operation. Further, the first electric rail unit includes three elongated and electrically isolated power rails and one elongated and electrically isolated signal rail, and the second electric rail unit includes one elongated and electrically isolated signal rail. Each of the electric rail units has mounting means for each of its rails, and the mounting means support the signal rails on the respective electric rail units substantially equidistantly from the tire path centerline and substantially equidistantly above the road surface.

    • A method and apparatus for on-line diagnostics, particularly for use in power circuits of a DC-DC converter is described. Signals are sensed at selected strategic test points in a circuit and compared with stored expected signals for those points under normal operating conditions. Whenever the signals sensed at the selected test points do not correlate with the corresponding expected signals, the sensed signal is compared with abnormal signals stored in the memory associated with known failure conditions for that test point. Whenever the sensed signal matches closely with a signal for a known failure condition, an indication of the particular failure is logged into memory. If the sensed signal does not match a known failure condition, an indication of an unknown failure condition is logged into memory. Failure information can later be retrieved by maintenance personnel at a convenient time or can be displayed on an operator's display during operation.
