    • Real time streaming over serial buses busing Internet protocol IP is becoming more and more important. With new bus technologies e.g. 10 Gbit Ethernet even streaming in HD cinematography quality and uncompressed form becomes possible. In this case, however, data access management by software means is critical or simply not possible for performance reasons even if high performance micro-controllers are used where the software runs. The invention proposes for an apparatus in a network to implement hardware means for processing the real-time critical data packets as well as software means for processing the real-time uncritical data packets and a filter algorithm respectively a de-multiplexer for analyzing packet header and passing the real-time critical data packets to the hardware means and the real-time uncritical data packets to the software means.

    • In the method for operating a multi-port bridge for the routing, differentiated in accordance with traffic classes, of data packets which are subdivided into different priority classes in accordance with the IEEE802.1D standard, an additional traffic class “isochronous channel” is introduced. The multi-port bridge is configured in such a manner that at least one predetermined port in the case of unidirectional transmission and at least one predetermined port pair in the case of bidirectional transmission is operated in the “forwarding” state in which the predetermined port or the predetermined port pair forwards data packets of the additional traffic class IC from a queue. During the forwarding, all ports are deactivated with the exception of the predetermined port or port pair. The isochronous data stream is not restricted to one port or port pair but can be executed several times in dependence on the data rate of the transmission channel.

    • The invention pertains to a computer system and a method for operating the same. The computer system comprising a network storage device being connected by a serial network link to a plurality of network devices. The network storage device comprising a block based storage device and a scalable cache selector having a cache memory that is sub-divided into a plurality of cache queues, wherein each cache queue is dedicated to one of the network devices. The method comprising the steps of:a) receiving at least one input data packet that is assigned to one of the network devices at the queue selector, b) transferring and storing said input data packet in a cache queue being assigned to the respective network device, c) sending an output data packet from said cache queue that comprises at least a part of a data content comprised by the input data packets that are stored in said cache queue, wherein the step of outputting the output data packet is performed if the amount of data of the received input data packets that are stored in said cache queue exceeds a threshold value defining a predetermined size of the output data packet.
