    • An illuminating device includes: a light source; a light guide plate which converts light emitted from the light source into a surface light ray and emits the surface light ray through a front surface of the light guide plate; and an optical sheet which changes a propagation direction of the surface light ray emitted from the light guide plate. The light source is arranged in end surface different from the front surface in the light guide plate. A polarization state converting structure to convert a polarization state of the light propagating through the light guide plate is provided in a surface opposing the front surface in the light guide plate. The polarization state converting structure contains an inclination plane having a ridge line in a direction different from a direction in parallel to the longitudinal direction of the end surface.

    • An object of the present invention is to provide a simply configured liquid crystal display device capable of providing a high front luminance when light obliquely enters a micro lens array. The liquid crystal display device comprises: a pair of polarizing plates which sandwich a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched by the pair of substrates; transmission openings formed in a pixel to limit the quantity of light which penetrates the liquid crystal layer; condensing elements formed on the side of one of the substrates, opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is disposed, to condense light to the transmission openings; and a planar light-emitting element which emits light to be applied to the condensing elements; wherein the light to be emitted from the planar light-emitting element forms a certain angle with respect to its perpendicular when emitted; and wherein the position of the transmission opening is relatively shifted with respect to that of the condensing element so as to increase the quantity of light which penetrates the transmission opening, in association with the light-emitting direction of the planar light-emitting element.

    • Provided is an illuminating device (1) including: a light source (10); a light-guide-plate (20) received light from the light source at a side surface of the light-guide-plate and outputting from a front surface of the light-guide-plate; and reflector (30) disposed on a rear surface side of the light-guide-plate. The light-guide-plate outputs light having a peak of a luminance at an output angle inclined with respect to a normal line of the front surface. A part of the light output at the angle is made obliquely incident on the front surface at an angle smaller than a critical angle to be reflected in the light-guide-plate and, then, when the part of the light obliquely travels to the rear surface and to return to the front surface, polarized light components are converted so as to contain more p-polarized light components than s-polarized, and the part of the light is output.
