In the deflection device that deflects the electron beams, the horizontal deflection magnetic field is made uniform and the vertical deflection magnetic field is made barrel shaped. The half-width a of the magnetic flux distribution on the tube axis of the horizontal deflection magnetic field is set so that a/A=0.1 to 0.4, where A is the distance from the center of the magnetic flux density distribution to the phosphor screen surface. It is arranged that the picture signals modulating the respective beams are not mutually time-wise offset since the three electron beams are parallel. Thus little electron beam spot distortion is obtained over the whole picture screen.

    • A color picture tube apparatus comprising a color picture tube and beam deflecting means surrounding the color picture tube. The color picture tube includes an in-line type electron gun and a phosphor screen with phosphor layers. Each phosphor layer emits red, green and blue light when the electron beams from the electron gun impinge upon it. The beam deflecting means includes a horizontal deflection coil for generating a horizontal deflection magnetic field, a vertical deflecting coil and correction coils. The vertical deflecting coil and the correction coils cooperate to generate a vertical deflection magnetic field. The distribution of the horizontal deflection magnetic field is barrel-shaped on the electron gun side and pincushion-shaped on the phosphor screen side and is, as a whole, pincushion-shaped. The distribution of the vertical deflection magnetic field is barrel-shaped on the electron gun side and pincushion-shaped on the phosphor screen side and is, as a whole, barrel-shaped. The correction coils serve to automatically correct both an image distortion and a convergence error at the same time.

The convergence electrode has three pairs of pole pieces each of which is formed of a magnetic substance with high permeability and is arranged in the neck section so as to surround the electron beam between the pole pieces. The length Wp of each pole piece along the tube axis is about two times or more the distance G between the pole pieces, and the length Wp is about twice the thickness Wy of the convergence yoke along the tube axis. Thus, the leakage flux from the pair of pole pieces along the tube axis is 20% or less of the total magnetic field generated by the convergence yoke.
