    • If the number of returned bills is two or more, the returned bills are identified as abnormally returned bills by an abnormally returned bill detecter, and predetermined abnormal-state processing is accomplished by performing control operations using an abnormality processor. If a bill has jammed in the bill conveying channel, information concerning the direction in which the bill has jammed is stored in the bill jamming direction memory unit of the control unit, and, as a result of control operations performed by the bill reverse-direction conveyance control unit of the control unit, the bill is conveyed in the direction opposite to the bill jamming direction stored in the bill jamming direction memory unit when the bill jammed in the bill conveying channel is to be removed. A shutter that opens and closes the bill conveying channel is also installed and the shutter is driven via a gear transmission comprising a worm gear that develops considerable frictional force between the engaged gears and has a high reduction rate as viewed from the motor side, and a worm wheel that engages the worm gear.

    • A bill processor having pivotally supported parts for easy maintenance. The bill processor includes a machine body, a bill conveyer disposed in the body for conveying a bill along a bill passage, and a front mask having a bill insertion port and disposed on the front of the body. The bill processor also has a bill identification device disposed on the bill passage for determining the genuineness of the inserted bills, as well as a bill stacker. In one bill processor, the conveyer is supported via a shaft to be freely pivotable toward the front of the machine body, and a front mask is supported to be freely pivotable with respect to the machine body. In another bill processor, a support structure is provided for supporting the machine body including the conveyer and the bill stacker so the machine body is freely pivotably supported with respect to the front mask and freely detachably engaged to the front mask. A pivot stopper structure is provided and includes a pivot guiding groove formed on the front mask and a shaft protruding from the machine body and inserted in the pivot guiding groove for adjusting a pivot angle of the machine body with respect to the front mask, and a notch on the front mask for guiding the shaft into the pivot guiding groove.

    • A coin separator includes first and second coin passages separated and defined in part by a plate having an elongated hole disposed lengthwise in the downward direction of coin movement. The diameter of the elongated hole is less than large diameter coins and greater than smaller diameter coins which are to be sorted. The plate is attachable to and detachable from the casing for cleaning and repair purposes, and a lower portion of the elongated hole has arcuate cutouts on both sides of a lower portion of the plate which projects upwardly in opposite relationship to downward coin movement. The peripheries of the arcuate cutouts and the upwardly projecting plate portion are tapered upwardly in cross-section which in conjunction with a tongue having a lower end movable into and out of the elongated hole assure that bent and/or deflected coins of small diameter pass through the appropriate coin passage.
