    • An image forming apparatus including a cleaning unit wherein a storage is defined in a cleaning housing to store therein toner to be discarded which is collected from the surface of a photoconductive drum after image transfer. The aforesaid storage has a capacity exceeding the maximum volume of toner to be used under normal conditions within the service life of the photoconductive drum. A cumulative number of produced copies is found from a signal from a paper discharge detecting sensor, so that with the number reaching a certain value, it is judged that the life of the photoconductive drum has expired. If a reed switch detects that the storage is full of waste toner before the expiry of the life of the photoconductive drum, it is judge to be abnormal, and a display unit is caused to indicate abnormality. Concurrent execution of the exchange of photoconductive drums and disposal of toner waste is assured, and if this is not accomplished, warning for trouble shooting is provided.

    • An imaging unit comprising a frame means, an image-carrying means mounted on the frame means, a developing means and a cleaning means. The cleaning means includes a toner conveying pipe member made of a synthetic rubber for defining a passage for conveying the toner removed from the image-carrying means, a toner conveying means for conveying the toner through the toner conveying pipe member, and a toner-recovering container detachably combined to the toner conveying pipe member. When the toner-recovering container is combined to the toner conveying pipe member, the toner discharge opening formed in the side surface of the toner conveying pipe member is communicated with the toner receiving opening formed in the toner-recovering container. A positioning member is disposed to place the toner discharge opening and the toner receiving opening in positions relative to each other. There are further disposed a shutter member capable of moving between a close position for closing the toner discharge opening and an open position for opening the toner discharge opening, and a resilient urging means for resiliently urging the shutter member toward the close position. When the toner-recovering container is combined to the toner conveying pipe member, the shutter member is caused to move from the close position along the toner conveying pipe member and is then caused to move in a direction to separate away from the side surface of the toner conveying pipe member to arrive at the close position.

    • A toner conveyer applied to a housing having a pair of side walls and a through hole formed in at least one of the pair of side walls. The toner conveyer includes a shaft which is inserted at its one end portion in said through hole formed in one of said pair of side walls and is mounted between said pair of side walls to rotate. A main spiral vane is formed on the outer peripheral surface of a main portion of the shaft. An inside limiting piece is formed at the one end portion of the shaft. The inside limiting piece has protruded portions that extend in the radial direction beyond the inner diameter of the through hole and non-protruded portions located on the inside of the inner diameter of the through hole in the radial direction. The shaft is limited from moving toward one of the pair of side walls as the protruded portions come into contact with the inner surface of one of the pair of side walls but the communication is maintained between the through hole and the interior of the housing owing to the presence of the non-protruded portions. An auxiliary spiral vane is formed on the one end portion of the shaft at a position on the outer side of the inside limiting piece and is located in the through hole to send back the toner that has entered into the through hole to the housing when the shaft is rotated in a predetermined direction.
