    • A large coulter is laterally rigidly connected to a tractor. The coulter prevents lateral shifts and jerks of the tractor, thereby eliminating the tractor as a source of lateral shifts of drafted earthworking equipment. When also laterally rigidly connected to the drafted implement, the coulter practically eliminates lateral shifts of the implement as well. On a first pass, such as when plowing furrows to form beds for row crops, the coulter cuts a slot in the ground. During subsequent passes, driving the tractor over the same pairs of furrows, the coulter tracks this slot, causing the drafted earthworking implement to follow a path matching that of the implements used on the first pass. A draft member and the coulter frame also connect the drafting force exerted by the implement at a point on the tractor forward of the tractor rear axles, thus enhancing draft capabilities and fuel efficiency of the tractor while retaining the conventional rear hitch, and stabilizing the tractor as described above.

    • A stabilizing device comprising a rigid anti-sway roller journalled about a wear axle is mounted on an agricultural tractor. The device provides a rigid stabilizing opposing force between the draft links and the rear structure of the tractor, while allowing the draft links to be easily raised and lowered. The device also includes a special assembly whereby the stabilizing force can be varied by adjusting the distance between the roller and the rear structure. The adjustment is accomplished by rotation of a nut on a connecting bolt or rotation of a threaded bolt thus eliminating the need for adjustment shims.

    • A guidance system for an agricultural tractor includes a furrow feeler which depends from a horizontal shaft so that the shaft rotates about a horizontal axis aligned with the direction of draft. Misalignment causes rotation of the horizontal shaft, which through arms and switches causes an electric motor to turn in a first or second direction as is appropriate to cause the tractor to follow the furrow. The motor is connected by suitable transmission to a yieldable tire which engages the steering wheel of the tractor so that rotation of the tire from the motor will cause the tractor to be steered from the steering wheel. A gauge wheel forms a track furrow so that in future operations, the tractor follows the precise path as before.

    • Stabilizng arms are applied to an agricultural tractor having a three point hitch with a quick hitch frame. Specifically, a belly plate is added to the frame beams about half way between the front axle and the rear axle. A horizontal frame draw bar extends from the belly plate to a pivot pin mounted by a clamp below the rear axle housing. The stabilizing arms extend from the pivot pin below the axle housing back to a quick hitch frame pin, which is an extension of the quick hitch pin and extends outboard of the quick hitch frame on each side thereof. A cross brace extends between the stabilizing arms to form a rigid stabilizing frame. Because the pivot pin below the axle is not coaxial with the pin by which the normal draft links are connected to the differential housing of the tractor, it is necessary that the stabilizing arms be pivoted so that the quick hitch frame can be mounted to have its normal motion to raise and lower the tillage implements connected to the quick hitch frame.

    • A farm tractor is automatically guided along a row of stalks to harvest the crop from the stalks. Every 30 ms the average of 10 ms readings of the distance or deviation of the tractor from the row of stalks is calculated. The angles of the guiding wheels are measured. These two are compared. If the wheels are not angled correctly according to this comparison, a correction is made to the steering wheel, which is the manual steering wheel normally used to guide the tractor. For Auto-Track the deviation is averaged for 7/8ths of a second. If this average shows that the tractor is deviating consistently to one side or another the deviation will be corrected according to the controls. The 7/8ths second calculation is repeated every 7/8ths of a second. At any time that the 7/8ths calculation shows that there is a persistent deviation a correction will be made. These corrections will remain as a permanent correction until a subsequent correction changes them. Subsequent corrections may either add to or subtract from the correction. For Smart-Drive every 30 ms a determination is made as to whether the tractor is on the same side of the stalks as it was one second previously. Also, the determination will be made as to whether the tractor is closer to the row of stalks on the same side of the stalks than it was one second earlier. If the tractor is closer to the row of stalks, and on the same side as it was one second earlier, then the guiding wheels are adjusted to bring the tractor back to the row of stalks at a slower correction rate than before.

    • A carrier for a row follower is pivoted to the front of an agricultural tractor by a horizontal carrier pivot which is at right angles to the direction of travel of the tractor. This pivot permits the carrier to pivot away from the tractor in the event the tractor is reversed in direction of travel while the row follower is in the operating position. The row follower is connected to an encoder housing. The encoder housing is mounted upon an assembly pivot bolt so that it may be tilted to a carry position which raises to horizontal position, a shank which carries the row follower. The tilting of the encoder is accomplished by a solenoid which is primarily controlled from the cab of the tractor. The row follower shank is biased to be in a position aligned with the direction of travel. Also, the row follower shank is limited by the prongs of a fork to a maximum limited deviation from the alignment with the direction of travel so that it does not swing wildly.
